Department Overview

Oregon Health & Science University is a nationally prominent research university and Oregons only public academic health center. As a major regional referral center OHSU has a varied caseload. The surgical lab processes over 61000 surgical specimens per year. The Department of Pathology has a collegial faculty AP/CP residency program a post-sophomore fellowship program and eight post-graduate fellowship programs. We are supported by excellent molecular genetic laboratories and state-of-the-art core laboratory. OHSU offers a variety of collaborative research opportunities and is home to the Knight Cancer Institute an international leader in research and cancer treatment.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Dissects and prepares biopsies and other non-complex surgical resections prepares and processes frozen tissue including slide preparation and dictates gross descriptions per surgical pathology manual.
  • Provide various supportive functions such as grossing bench/instrument maintenance and decontamination specimen accessioning hazardous waste removal specimen triage labeling of Pathology materials and specimen transport etc.
  • Performs proper handling storage and disposal of surgical tissue while adhering to the regulatory and compliance standards regarding biohazard and safety. Disposes of biohazardous waste materials and maintains chemical waste storage areas.
  • Dictates the macroscopic description for routine uncomplicated surgical specimens without selective sampling including anatomic site measurements and dimensions weight count color and any abnormal findings according to written policies and procedures.
  • Escalates non-routine or complex surgical specimens to the Pathologist Assistant or Pathologist.
  • Completes assignments with accuracy and in a timely manner without compromising the quality of the patient sample
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution OR
  • Education/training equivalent to the above that includes the following:
    • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry six semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination AND
    • Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES NAACLS or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above) OR at least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
  • 1 year of experience working in a clinical lab
  • Must be able to work independently and under appropriate supervision
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations
  • Extensive knowledge of advanced laboratory theory technique and testing related to anatomic pathology.
  • Knowledge of current laboratory principles and procedures used in gross tissue examination.
  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree with a major in biological science

  • 2 years of grossing tech experience
  • Experience with Epic & Beaker and Dragon
  • Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES NAACLS or other organization approved by HHS

Additional Details

Hours are expected to be 9:00am to 5:30pm Monday through Friday. Evenings and weekends may be requested on rare occasion. 100% onsite position with no opportunity for remote work. May require travel between sites and starting and ending the work shift at different locations at OHSU either on Marquam Hill or at the South Waterfront which are connected by an aerial tram.

Working in the grossing room will result in exposure to blood body fluids tissue chemical hazards and radiation; working in a somewhat noisy and crowded environment; and wearing gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment for long periods of time.

Requires the ability to carry and lift up to 30 lbs.; ability to stand for up to 8 hours per day; ability to bend reach and carry as required for assigned tasks; ability to utilize simple and complicated laboratory equipment and computers.
