Were looking for an investigations correspondent to unearth important agenda-setting stories that hold power to account.

You will be expected to show real commitment in pursuit of stories which could span a diverse range of subjects in the UK or internationally. While your main focus will be medium and long-term projects you will sometimes work on faster timeframes.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment.

We are seeking candidates with a proven record in investigative journalism but we recognise that can involve a very broad array of interests skills and experience. There is no single mould for an investigative reporter we are always seeking to build a diverse ensemble of journalists with different backgrounds and experiences. You may have particular expertise for example in AI politics kleptocracy disinformation sport sexual abuse migration or financial crime or you could be a generalist who relishes deep dives into unknown waters. We are searching for a candidate who has a thorough and meticulous grasp of detail.

About the role

  • Produce high quality investigative journalism across multiple platforms
  • Break stories that have national and international impact
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the investigative team and wider newsroom
  • Attend daily meetings contributing to group discussions and helping the team identify journalistic priorities
  • Work closely with Guardian editors and lawyers to find ways to get legally risky stories over the line
  • Adhere to appropriate standards of data retention and security and use encrypted channels for communication when required
  • Work closely with the head of investigations and deputy head of investigations to identify personal priorities and develop investigations
  • Tell stories through a range of other mediums such as long reads magazine features audio podcasts data visuals and films

About you

  • Demonstrable experience in investigative journalism
  • Proven experience of written journalism whether news or features
  • Preferable experience in visual / audio journalism
  • Able to exercise strong editorial judgment in complex legally sensitive situations balancing speed accuracy and risk.
  • Demonstrate a rigorous commitment to ethical journalism source protection and legal compliance in high-risk reporting environments.
  • Experience of a range of advanced investigative techniques
  • Awareness of the demands of digital platforms and print
  • Strong understanding of important issues with global impact
  • Understanding of how to use various social media
  • Excellent contacts and a proven ability to develop new sources
  • Ideally youll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
