Job Summary

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Exempt Status: non-exemptReports to: Principal and District Lead Nurse Revised: 4/2019Dept./School: Campus as assignedPrimary Purpose:Implement comprehensive program of health services for campus. Provide health services to students and staff. Promote health education and preventative health practices for students and staff. Oversee the day to day needs of students as related to health care. Serve as secondary support to District Lead :Education/Certification:Graduate of an accredited professional nursing programValid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse ExaminersExperience as school nurse preferredExperience with supervision of LVNs preferredCertification by the Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct and record student vision hearing and spinal screeningCertification by the Texas Department of State Health Services to vision screen with a Spot Vision CameraCPR / AED Instructor CertificationSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defectsStrong organizational communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to implement policies and proceduresAble to develop and execute student plans of careBloodborne Pathogen TrainerEpi Pen TrainerNon - Licensed Diabetic Care TrainerNurse Office substitute TrainerExperience:Two years nursing experience preferably in school or health setting with childrenMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Nursing Services1. Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills the nursing process and established school health protocols2. Provide temporary and emergency care for sick or injured students 3. Notify parents / guardians of accident or illness and secure medical care for students (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached)4. Serve as health advocate for students5. Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school .6. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures7. Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening program; make referrals as necessary.8. Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.9. Evaluate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics Instruction1. Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups2. Educate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics3. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual studentsConsultation1. Serve as health liaison between school physicians parents and community2. Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students teachers parents and medical and health professionals as needed3. Participate in Admission Review and Dismissal Committee crisis team and school committees and develop Individual Education Plans ( IEPs) and Individual Health Plans (IHPs)4. Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health -related Individual Education Plans and Individual Health Plans items5. Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse6. Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission and accompanied by the Lead Nurse and/or Campus Principal7. Communicate regularly with principal Lead Nurse school counselor teachers parents food service and other staff regarding health service issuesAdministration8. Obtain review and evaluate student immunization9. Supervise and train nurse aide (s) LVN (s) and nurse office sub (s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy as required at the request of the District Lead Nurse.10. Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required including clinic records and accurate updated health records on all students11. Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory12. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws: Texas Department of State Health Service CDC State Board of Education and local board policy in the health service area13. Report immediately potential health and safety hazards to Lead Nurse and/or Principal14. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulationsProfessional Development15. Maintain certification in CPR state certification for vision hearing and spinal screening and state certification to screen with vision camera16. Model behavior that is professional ethical and responsibleSafety17. Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care18.
