In this role you will be part of the Monument Conservation Unit (MCU) and will have responsibility for all heating plant in the Edinburgh area which includes Edinburgh Castle Holyrood Palace and various other buildings. This involves daily weekly and monthly checks of pumps valves and filters statutory maintenance and servicing of main heating plant and daily monitoring of the building management system (BMS) which includes both domestic and commercial gas fired plant.

Key Responsibilities of this role

  • Responsible for the safe reliable and efficient operation of low temperature hot water systems in various buildings within the Region.

  • Help deliver a world leading heritage site for visitors and deliver functions and events.

  • Plan planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on a yearly basis and identify repairs and improvements.

  • Programme the BMS system and carry out repairs/replacement of the plant including but not only regular visual inspection of all plant and equipment.

  • Check all pumps and valves for correct operation check all radiators for sticking pins. Check all zones for correct operation. Dose/pasteurise hot water tanks. Check hot water for temperature and volume. Check ventilation in kitchens clean and replace filters where necessary.

  • Carry out maintenance and service to heating systems in the region as instructed by the District Works Manager.

  • Keep District Works Manager informed of issues or repairs needed and all future works regarding boiler systems and approved by District Works Manager.

  • Interact with the Visitor Operations and MCU teams to attend to faults and omissions.

  • Investigate defects and remedy them and/or report to line manager.

  • Play a key role in ensuring that the heating systems are maintained and operational for HES colleagues and stakeholders for a first-class visitor experience to regional sites within the estate.

  • Suggest improvements to outdated systems using experience and knowledge.

  • Upgrading plant and equipment to electrification as part of HES Climate Change Policy.

  • Access the BMS system to alter the heating requirements within the region at the request of line manager Visitor & Community and Collections colleagues for various events and functions.

  • Work closely with other MCU colleagues as part of a team to achieve the region works program for the operational needs set out by the Regional Works Manager.

  • Provide expert advice on gas regulations and other gas related issues.

  • Keep the working site clean and tidy.

  • Delivery of an effective and appropriate service to all service users fairly and without discrimination.


Throughout your employment with HES you will be required to attend training courses identified to assist the work or to comply with health and safety legislation including first aid (training as required this may require overnight stays away from home).

Essential:

  • Time served tradesperson with SVQ in Heating and Ventilating: Industrial & Commercial InstallationSCQF Level 6 or City and Guilds equivalent level (SCQFLevel6 or above) in Domestic Gas Installation and Maintenance (full apprenticeship)

  • Gas Safe Registered

  • CCCN1 qualification

  • CoDC1 qualification

  • CoDNCO1 Change over to Domestic Natural Gas to Commercial

  • CDGA1 Commercial heating Boilers

  • CENWAT qualification

  • TPCP1 qualification

  • Unvented hot water storage system qualification

  • COMCAT 1 and 3 Install Service Breakdown & Commission Commercial Appliances

  • Proven track record working on commercial and domestic gas systems

  • Demonstrable experience of all aspects of high standard heating system management and maintenance on a large scale

  • Demonstrable experience of planning work heating system management and organising ongoing maintenance and routine maintenance work

  • Demonstrable experience of working on BMS systems for planned and ad-hoc heating requirements

  • Ability to identify hazards defects and the need for replacement adjustment or repair to ensure compliance with agreed codes law working practices and health and safety

  • Demonstrable skill in the installation repair and maintenance of all types of residential and commercial heating systems

  • Demonstrable knowledge of applicable codes standards and regulations for this role

  • Good working knowledge of plumbing systems

  • Ability to read and understand Plans and Schematics of heating systems
