TITLE:ELEMENTARY GUIDANCE COUNSELOR
QUALIFICATIONS:As set by state certification authorities and North Central Association; Counselor certification preferred.
REPORTS TO:Principal at both Skyview and Surrey Hills Elementaries
JOB GOAL: To assist students in the elementary schools with educational planning and Personal-social reaching the desiredgoals of individual counselingand group work the person assignedto this position would work cooperatively with students staff parents and community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assumes a leadership role in planning developing and initiating a sounddevelopmental guidance program for the school in cooperation with theprincipal.
- Works with all concerned persons in assisting them in understanding andappreciating the individuality of each student.
- Maintains a daily log of activities.
- Plans and leads small group activities designed to lead students to increasedself-understanding and self-worth as well as an understandingof others and anappreciation of their worth and uniqueness.
- Plans and leads classroom guidance units designed to lead students to anincreased awareness of self and others in the areas of feeling valuescareersand communication.
- Works to identify and help in proper placement of exceptional students.
- Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personalproblems.
- Interprets the guidance program to the community and providescommunityagencies with information on the needs of youth.
- Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with thegeneral range of services offered by the guidance department and toimprovethe educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
- Counsels with parents toward meeting specific needs of their children andworkwith them to develop a plan of action.
- Confers with teachers as a co-worker in developing a plan of action in aneffort to better meet the needs of a student who is having educationalsocialemotional or disciplinary difficulty.
- Observes and studies pupil behavior in the classroom and other situationsasrequested in order to identify needs for special guidance services.
- Assists in identifying and facilitating referral of children with seriousproblems toother school or community services.
- Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
- Provides for his own professional growth through an ongoing program ofreading workshops seminars conferences and/or advanced course workatinstitutions of higher learning.
- Completes reports and other job related paperwork as required at orbeforethe time requested.
- Accepts the responsibility and arrives punctually for activities and duties asassigned.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with co-workers.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rulesgoverningstudent life and conduct.
- Maintains appropriate emotional stability physical health personalappearance and personality.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
