Main Purpose of Job

The Health Physicist Supervisor will plan direct developand implement activities of the Radioactive Materials Inspection Section. Theincumbent in this position will be responsible for statewide oversight thatincludes radioactive material inspections investigations enforcement actionsfacility decommissioning emergency response and financial assurance to assurethat users of radioisotopes are conducting their licensed activities in a safeand legal manner. The Health Physicist Supervisor is also responsible forproviding technical advice and recommendations on health physics matters and onthe regulations of ionizing radiation sources.

The working conditions of this position may involveexposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. During some industrialplant visits the incumbent may encounter high or low ambient temperaturefumes or dust. Work involves exposure to hazardous conditions which may resultin injury. The incumbent may be exposed to radiation during routine inspectionsand emergency responses. Work involves special physical demands such asclimbing ladders etc. Work requires the use of protective equipment such asgoggles gloves mask etc. When going on site visits protective gear ismandatory.

This position involves conductinginspections throughout Baltimore City and surrounding Maryland counties.

Theincumbent is required to operate a State vehicle.If you currently hold anout-of-state drivers license you must provide a certified copy of yourdriving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time ofappointment. Please note that all individuals must maintain a valid driverslicense with no more than five points to operate a State vehicle.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:Nine years of experience in performing the recognition evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with aminimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical physical or biological sciences and five years of experience in performing the recognition evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Masters degree in radiation safety radiological health health physics or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for six years of the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Masters degree in mathematical biological or physical science from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience.

may substitute the possession of a Doctorate in health physics nuclear physics radiation management or other related field of radiological health from an accreditedcollege or university for seven years of the required experience.

may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelors degree in biology environmental and health sciences medical physics or physics.
  • Experience managing employees in a technical or regulatory environment.
  • A high level of expertise regarding Health Physics or Radiation Safety/Security including knowledge of radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Experience with radiation control regulations and familiarity with related guidance documents.
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) Radiation Safety Specialist or Radiation Expert.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.
