DescriptionThe position primarily supports the MTREC-Lewisburg Beef Cattle Program but also provides secondary support to the Spring Hill Beef Cattle Program. The position provides professional support and leadership for research production and entrepreneurial operations associated with the beef cattle herd the TN Beef Heifer Development Center and Bull Evaluation Programs.
Responsibilities- Execute all facets of Beef Herd/Stocker Production Management and oversight of Research Projects.
- Provide supporting guidance and direction to TN Beef Heifer Development Center.
- Assist the Center Director in creation and facilitation of entrepreneurial programs.
- Perform project analysis providing reports to the Primary Investigators.
- Provide support to the MTREC Bull Evaluation Program.
- Assist with the assurance of IACUC compliance and Employee Safety training.
- Accurate and effective communication between the research unit the researchers and clientele.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelors degree in Animal Science or Agricultural related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years experience or 3 years pre-professional term experiences are acceptable (internships teaching responsibilities volunteer work in the animal agricultural industry and other relevant term experiences) in animal agricultural-related fields.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.
- Knowledge Skills Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of beef cattle/Stocker operations management; health nutrition and behavior.
- Ability to carry out research protocols and simple data analysis.
- Ability to execute and oversee research projects.
- Skilled in effective allocation of Research Center resources.
- Skilled in facilitating and directing the work of support personnel and students.
- Ability to operate both farm production and specialized research equipment.
- Ability to work under limited/no supervision.
- Knowledgeable of all current and relevant computer programs (i.e. Excel Word).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education:
- Masters degree in Animal Science or Agricultural related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experiential learning/pre-professional opportunities that could include internships within the animal agricultural industry volunteer work in the large animal agricultural industry Graduate Teaching Assistant responsibilities or other relevant experiences.
- Knowledge Skills Abilities:
- Skilled in bovine artificial insemination and instruction.
- Knowledgeable in beef cattle nutrition.
- Knowledgeable in animal health especially in the beef industry.
- Ability to operate laboratory research equipment.
- Skilled in the operation of Ultrasound technologies associated with reproduction.

Here university experts research and demonstrate the best methods for developing replacement heifersoften the most costly component of beef cattle production.
The program is a partnership of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture Tennessee Department of Agriculture and Tennessee Farmers Cooperative. Our facility serves as an off-site destination for heifer development making room for increased numbers of mature cows and increasing income potential per acre. Consigned heifers can be purchased at one of our annual heifer sales. We also host field days and other educational events to train area producers on best management practices.
