SUMMARY:

The primary function of an English Language Arts instructor is to teach the English language through reading speaking and writing to English-speaking students. The English language teacher uses a variety of media to help students appreciate the English language and acquire basic language arts skills.

To be successful as an English teacher you should be resilient hardworking and able to work under pressure. Outstanding candidates are constantly searching for ways to improve reading culture and student engagement.

While Grade 5 is housed in our middle school our students are taught in a double-block of English Language Arts that allows teachers to extend our K-4 literacy program and experience into the fifth grade. ELA teachers thus work in a middle school model in close collabration with both team members and grade level ELA colleagues.

Our curriculum and instruction is guided by acommitted to ensuring that every child builds a strong foundation in literacy through explicit evidence-based instruction in decoding fluency vocabulary and comprehension.

By engaging with diverse complex texts writing across genres and participating in meaningful conversations our students develop curiosity critical thinking and a lifelong love of reading. Rooted in the science of reading and culturally responsive practices our inclusive learning environments honor students linguistic and cultural identities empowering them to think critically communicate confidently and become engaged informed members of their communities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSILBILITES:

  • Must follow the states educational standards for language or communication arts when designing the curriculum.
  • Teachers may plan courses that involve lectures about grammar group discussions of books or proofreading exercises. They may monitor student progress through assignments and tests.
  • Your goal is to help students develop their writing reading comprehension and listening and speaking skills with the aim of expanding their capacity to use the English language both for communication and personal enrichment.
  • Implementing and delivering quality instruction to students and executing the instructional program by demanding higher order thinking activities from students in a progressive manner
  • Collaborate with teaching staff and administrators to foster a good student experience

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree Required; Masters Degree preferred
  • Must holdDESE English 5-12 license
  • SEI Endorsement required
  • Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (CORI) and fingerprints

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Hudson School Committees policy on evaluation or in accordance with union contract.
