This role requires full time on site presence.

We are hiring a researcher to work on CBC Quebecs regional morning radio show Quebec AM which is heard Monday to Friday by English-speakers across the province outside of the Montreal-area. The role is based in Quebec City.

Your role

As a Researcher you will attend story meetings and pitch interviews for the host of the radio show to conduct. You will research and book interviews and prepare scripts background information and supporting audio material for the producer and host.

You will fact-check the information. You will also suggest innovative ways of conducting interviews.

You will help audiences discover our audio content on all of CBCs platforms by sharing segments on CBC Listen and contributing content to the CBC website.

You will also work at maintaining a solid network of contacts in many communities across Quebec from the Abitibi to the Gaspé and the Eastern Townships to Northern Quebec. You will ensure people from underrepresented communities have a voice on our show.

You may go out in the field to gather your interviews and sound and do live reports on air.

For reference purposes and at the time of this posting the work hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday in the office in Quebec City.

Description of duties:

  • Keep up with current events and maintain contacts with various sources.

  • Suggest and develop program content.

  • Attend production meetings. Suggest concepts story ideas/angles and potential guests.

  • Research and select information ideas and written audio and audiovisual documents.

  • Recommend and if necessary select interviewees. Conduct pre-interviews. Suggest interview questions approaches and scripts.

  • Prepare and present written and oral research reports. Constantly follow up with the host before and during the program. Suggest intros as needed.

  • Provide logistical support (arrival time fee parking etc.) for guests correspondents and panellists. Inform them of the programs content and lineup.

  • Create and maintain files on upcoming news stories.

  • Conduct short interviews on request and present your findings on air. Perform rough radio editing.

If necessary:

  • Write questions for games or contests.

  • Screen audience calls and reply to queries.

  • Coordinate the content of columns.

  • Conduct special research projects.

  • Perform all other related duties as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or the equivalent.

  • Two years relevant work experience.

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) and good command of French.

Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of Quebec City and the English-speaking communities across the province.

  • Able to work independently and in a team.

  • Wide general knowledge.

  • Able to develop digital treatments for stories.

  • Ability to and present written and oral research reports.

  • A keen interest in local radio and audio story-telling.

  • A general understanding of political structures and organizations in the greater Quebec City region and the province of Quebec.

  • Excellent knowledge of research tools and techniques.

  • Knowledge of interview techniques.

  • Able to analyze synthesize and think critically.

  • Able to discuss a topic clearly.

  • Must be able to make daily deadlines.
