Graduate of AMA approved Respiratory Care Program Required

3 Years Med/Surg or critical care experiencepreferred

Registered Respiratory Therapist Upon Hire required

VA-BC - Vascular Access Board Certification Upon Hire Required

BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly required

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire preferred

NRP - Essential Neonatal Resuscitation Program 90 Days required

Good verbal communications good interpersonal skills computer experience

What You Will Do:

Patient Assessment/Plan of Care

Obtains/verifies physician order for therapy and validate for appropriateness. Reviews available medical records and obtain pertinent medical history from patient or family. Evaluates each patient using age and diagnosis appropriate assessment tests and measurements. Applies appropriate patient care interventions according to protocol guidelines and priority of care. Demonstrates competence in the performance of age appropriate patient assessment and individualizes care based on age specific needs.

Patient Treatment

Uses therapeutic treatment techniques appropriate to patient age and desire for treatment. Performs treatment procedures that are within the scope of the professional license. Performs/delegates technical procedures appropriately and safely. Determine patient response to treatment and evaluate progress (reassessment). Educates patient and family through instruction demonstration or appropriate handouts in treatment plan safety issues and home programs/self management. Maintain bedside and ventilator alarms in audible position. Maintains patient safety throughout treatment. Communicates with physicians and other healthcare personnel as appropriate regarding patient care issues. Demonstrates competence in the performance of age appropriate patient treatment and individualizes care based on age specific needs. Administers medication in a safe/correct manner adhering to medication administration guidelines. Reports unsafe conditions and equipment in proper/timely manner. Responds to emergency situations.

Documentation

Documents verification of physician orders prior to delivery of care. Documents aspects of each treatment session in accordance with departmental JCAHO Medicare and other applicable regulatory guidelines. Documents assessments of education needs education provided and patient understanding of education provided in accordance with departmental JCAHO Medicare and other applicable regulatory guidelines. Reports and documents unusual occurrences on the job injuries and medical device malfunctioning. Enters patient charges and record procedures according to departmental guidelines.

Seeks assistance/supervision/consultation as needed and reports to supervisor any problems and/or solutions regarding delivery of patient care. Demonstrates commitment to the maintenance of a clean safe work environment that is compliant with departmental hospital and regulatory agency requirements. Works in partnership with peers other disciplines and departmental personnel. Maintains continuity of patient care inter-shift and inter-hospital. Adapts to changes in workload assignment.

Vascular Access

Assesses patients for best vascular access options and collaboratively develops the best plan of care for the patient and family. Places Peripherally Inserted Central and Midline Catheters using Microseldinger Technique (MST). May support clinical staff with difficult peripheral intravenous catheters. Proficient in the use of ultrasound guidance and other technologic advancements to gain vascular access. Utilizes technology adjuncts with procedures as indicated. Asists with vascular access troubleshooting and malfunctioning as needed. Documents all aspects of care on appropriate documentation forms. Reviews labs patient history and physician orders to determine appropriate line to be utilized for the procedure and/or identify potential issues that may arise or preclude the patient from being a viable candidate or require alternate form of vascular access. Collaborates with physicians to determine appropriate long-term access needs. Obtains patients authorization to perform the procedure. Inserts peripheral venous and/or arterial catheters to provide access or more complex vascular access as indicated. Inserts and maintains peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines according to department policy and procedures to include dressing changes line reviews and declotting. Utilizes ultrasound technology to ensure accurate insertion of the PICC line. Reviews chest x-rays to ensure accurate placement of the central venous catheter or device. Maintains sterile field throughout the insertion process to ensure quality outcomes. Maintains accurate timely and appropriate documentation. Assures the efficient operation of workflow of the department. Monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and material to ensure non-interruption of services. Provides maintenance of associated equipment as demonstrated through observation and documentation.

Work hours: PRN Variable Shifts with 8- and 12-hour options - days and evenings with some shifts ending at 11 PM following standard PRN III expectations.
