Your role

CBC News is hiring a permanent full-time Associate Producer to work for CBCs Investigative Unit.

The IUnit is responsible for delivering highly original investigative content to all platforms. Our team is closely allied with all News programs for whom we generate stories that are relevant relatable and reflective of our audiences. The IUnit also produces deeper-dive investigations that bring depth and context to breaking stories.

The successful candidate will have wide-ranging hard research skills and a solid track record for finding people documents and other data to support investigative storytelling. The candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other journalists to deliver high quality investigative journalism formatted for multiple platforms.

As an associate producer you will be expected to handle multiple files simultaneously This will include conducting basic research and environmental scans on story proposals seeking out possible sources developing a research file and/or report generating spreadsheets or other reference tools and materials as needed fact-checking information and confirming/ensuring our right to use images .

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of the journalistic and production requirements needed to contribute to the development of material across multiple platforms (digital video audio).They will have an aptitude for conceiving gathering and packaging stories and shorts on social media . Additionally they will instinctively understand audiences who seek CBC content on platforms including YouTube and TikTok.

In this pressure-filled environment its essential to be able to calmly face down challenges whether they be logistics around gathering in the field or the need to pivot quickly on a changing story. Even under tight timelines our teams are expected to take time to ensure our stories reflect a range of views and people wherever they live in Canada.

In covering a broad scope of stories we need to be as diverse as the country we serve both within our workforce and on air. Working under the direction and supervision of the leadership team the successful candidate will be a proven journalist with exceptional critical thinking skills. The successful candidate must welcome feedback and be ready to adapt to changes resulting from editorial and legal vetting of submitted material.

Along with their editorial strengths communication skills and exceptional creativity the successful candidate will be a committed team player.

Function:

With appropriate direction from the Executive and Senior Producers the Associate Producer participates in the research gathering production and post-production of a program and/or program segment. Initiative and independent judgment are encouraged and valued and actions taken must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies practices and standards.

Key Tasks:

  • Contributes ideas; pitches pursues and collects research and information.

  • Seeks out sources of information and possible guests

  • Assists in developing digital audio and video content including writing researching fact-checking all material and/or editing

  • Conducts field research and production as required

  • Participates in the story-vetting process.

  • Sources interviewees develops background material for Producer/Host.

  • Writes edits and packages stories for social and digital formats like TikTok YouTube

You are responsible for providing an updated resumé and highlighting the qualifications and skills required for this position.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent. Degree in journalism or equivalent experience is considered to be an asset for this role.

  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience with exposure to multi-platform content production is preferred

  • Developed understanding of the legal considerations that are key to investigative work

  • Exceptional online investigative research skills: data skills considered an asset

  • Proven track record pitching researching and delivering investigative content

  • Broad experience in all aspects of story production including conducting pre-interviews research fact checking and ensuring stories meet CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and legal requirements.

  • Sharp and creative writing ability

  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity and connection to diverse communities.

  • Excellent editorial judgment and critical-thinking skills.

  • Creative approach and commitment to innovative story-telling across platforms.

  • Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment and with tight deadlines without sacrificing creativity or quality.

  • Ability to take critical feedback and incorporate it into the work.

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal including the ability to clearly explain concepts to peers.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods.

  • Independent and self-motivated combined with the ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Proven track record of ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling. Contributes to the diversity of perspectives on the team.

  • High level of organization and productivity.

  • Able to work flexible hours.
