Job Summary

The Team Editor Audience will play a pivotal role in the Toronto Stars efforts to engage and expand its audience in one of the fastest growing and most diverse urban regions in the world.

The focus of this role will be working on our flagship newsletter First Up while also supporting the broader newsletter portfolio and other audience engagement initiatives. We are looking for a creative high-energy editor with strong news judgment who can marry top-notch journalism with a distinctive conversational voice that makes the Star an indispensable part of our readers morning routines.

This role falls within the Team Editor classification in the Stars Editorial Department and will report to the Senior Editor Audience Engagement and Live Journalism. Early morning evening and weekend work may be required. Team editors can be assigned to any newsroom department across a variety of assignments. The initial assignment will be in Audience.

What You Will Do

  • Work side-by-side with our lead newsletter writer and digital producers to develop ideas sharpen insights and experiment with new formats to ensure our journalism cuts through the noise.
  • Curate edit and publish compelling newsletters that engage and retain subscribers and meet the Stars standards.
  • Collaborate with the broader newsroom to identify the best Star journalism to showcase to our most loyal readers and develop innovating ways to present it. 
  • Develop strategies to turn a one-way broadcast into a two-way conversation and deepen relationships with readers and communities.
  • Use reader feedback and data analytics to refine subject lines and line-ups.

Salary: $73515.52 -$101881.52

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be in Toronto. 


Qualifications :

  • 3-5 years of experience in a high-pressure news environment.
  • A broad knowledge of local national and international issues and the ability to take complex stories and explain why they matter in conversational ways. 
  • Excellent news judgment.  
  • Strong editing skills and the ability to work with high-profile writers offering feedback that improves the work while respecting their voice.
  • Strong understanding of digital publishing best practices and basic elements of design and presentation.
  • Relentlessly high standards; organized detail-oriented and deadline-driven.
  • Familiarity with using analytics tools and data to inform editorial decisions and engagement strategies. 
  • Leadership skills that can remove obstacles make decisions and execute.
