JOB DESCRIPTION: Mechanic

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work in the inspection maintenance diagnosis and repair of district vehicles and equipment including school buses. The position ensures that all district vehicles are maintained in safe and reliable operating condition and comply with applicable safety standards and regulations. The Mechanic may also assist transportation staff by providing driver training support and operating district vehicles when necessary.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Mechanic:

  1. Diagnoses mechanical electrical transmission and drivetrain issues in school buses and district vehicles. *
  2. Performs repairs on engines braking systems electrical systems and other vehicle components. *
  3. Adjusts and replaces mechanical parts and systems to ensure proper operation and safety. *
  4. Conducts routine preventative maintenance including oil changes tire rotations brake inspections and fluid checks. *
  5. Inspects buses and district vehicles to ensure safe operating condition and compliance with safety standards. *
  6. Conducts road tests of buses and vehicles following maintenance or repairs. *
  7. Ensures vehicles meet state and federal transportation safety requirements. *
  8. Maintains accurate repair records maintenance logs and parts documentation. *
  9. Assists in maintaining compliance with transportation regulations and district policies. *
  10. Maintains tools equipment and work areas to ensure safe and efficient shop operations. *
  11. Ensures proper use and storage of mechanical tools and diagnostic equipment. *
  12. Assists with ordering or identifying parts and materials needed for repairs. *
  13. Assists other mechanics or transportation personnel with complex repairs or maintenance tasks. *
  14. Provides training or guidance to new drivers on vehicle operations including pre-trip and post-trip inspections. *
  15. Serves as a substitute school bus driver when needed to support transportation operations. *
  16. Attends all requires meetings/trainings regarding first aid and operation updates as required. *
  17. Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of applicable Motor Vehicle Code as it applies to the operation of vehicle in the transportation of school children.
  18. Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
  19. Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
    • Targeted job-related education in diesel technology automotive technology or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Experience
    • Previous experience performing vehicle maintenance and mechanical repair work is required.
  • Certifications and Licenses
  • Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with School Bus and Passenger endorsements or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe after hire.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  • Certificate in Diesel Technology or ability to obtain ASE School Bus Technician certification within 12 months of hire.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge
    • Vehicle mechanical systems including engines transmissions electrical systems and braking systems
    • Safety practices and procedures related to vehicle maintenance
    • Applicable transportation regulations policies and safety standards
  • Skills
    • Operation of mechanical tools diagnostic equipment and repair equipment
    • Maintaining accurate service records and documentation
    • Operating school buses and district vehicles safely
  • Abilities
    • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate repairs
    • Communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors
    • Adapt to changing priorities and respond to urgent maintenance needs
    • Work independently while following established procedures and safety guidelines

Employment Standards:

  • Minimum of high school education or GED
  • Must pass physical examination as required by U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Motor Vehicle Carrier Safety Regulations 49 CFR 391.41 391.49. Physical may be required after severe illness injury or as supervisors discretion.
  • Each person who drives a school bus must receive training to obtain a valid Class B or higher Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements as specified by the DOT requirements (ACSD#1 will assist hired candidates in training to obtain CDL.
  • Be able to lift legal OSHA requirements of 50 lbs.
  • Demonstrate the ability and physical dexterity to perform a DOT pre-trip inspection I.e. bending climbing stooping reaching crawling etc.
  • Physical ability test.
  • Must have satisfactory driving record secured from the Wyoming Department of Transportation and maintain insurability.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol test at the time of hire and random testing thereafter as required by DOT.
  • Application must meet minimum standards for the school bus driver as outline by the state of Wyoming Department of Education.
  • Must complete six (6) hours of training per year.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

- The work requires significant lifting carrying pushing and pulling; frequent climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching and crawling; and fine motor dexterity. The position is performed primarily in a vehicle maintenance shop environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of injury.
