Position Overview

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) is seeking an experienced Highway Safety & Impaired Driving Instructor Subject Matter Expert with prior sworn law enforcement experience to support statewide and national law enforcement training initiatives. This role will focus on curriculum development instructional design and delivery of training programs related to impaired driving drug recognition and highway safety.

The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in Drug Evaluation and Classification Program (DECP) operations and have experience coordinating and delivering training at both state and national levels.

Work Schedule & Travel
  • Hybrid role:
    • 3 4 weeks remote
    • On-site 2 3 days per cycle
  • Travel required
  • Local and non-local candidates accepted
  • Must be available for in-person interviews within one week of posting close
  • Must be able to start within two weeks of offer acceptance

Essential Functions
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans and instructional content for DUI drugs of abuse impaired driving and highway safety courses
  • Design implement and evaluate hands-on practical training and assessments
  • Create and update curriculum materials and instructor resources
  • Conduct course critiques and assess training effectiveness
  • Serve as a lead instructor and subject matter expert in drug recognition and impaired driving
  • Collaborate with the DPS Impaired Driving Coordinator and Division Chief
  • Ensure training aligns with national standards and emerging trends in impairment detection
  • Provide guidance on adult learning principles and instructional methodologies
  • Support statewide coordination of DECP activities and instructor development
  • Prepare reports documentation and recommendations for continuous program improvement
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years of sworn law enforcement experience
  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing lesson plans
  • Current IACP credential certification
  • Experience delivering law enforcement instructional programs
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Business or program management experience
  • Experience coordinating training programs at a statewide or multi-agency level
Education
  • Some college coursework required
