Hybrid

This position does not require an employee to be onsite full-time to perform most effectively. The employees role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite monthly.

The Role

The Staff Component Validation Engineer is the technical owner for ensuring assigned hardware meets all GM technical reliability regulatory and program requirements through robust analysis development and validation. The role requires the candidate to lead the creation of and approval of component validation strategy and plans (ADVP&R/VCRI) reviews and approves supplier validation and drives issue resolution through DV/PV and VTC/VDC milestones. At the staff level this position also provides technical leadership and mentorship and helps shape validation processes and standards across programs and regions.

What Youll Do:

Validation planning & SOR ownership

Serve as the GM Validation Engineer / Component Validation Engineer for assigned components responsible to ensure the ECU design is fully validated to the Statement of Requirements (SOR) and associated technical specifications.
Own validation content for SOR Appendices (e.g. G2 G3 G5/G6 where applicable) obtaining the appropriate global templates and commodity-specific content and attaching them to the SOR package.
Obtain and maintain the latest released commodity/feature/system VCRI and use it as the starting point to develop the Program-Specific ADVP&R (Analysis Development Validation Plan & Report) for the component; attach to the SOR as required.

Component validation strategy & execution

Develop maintain and approve the component ADVP&R / validation plan including analysis DV PV environmental (GMW3172) software (if applicable) and any special/regulatory testing needed for the component.
Define DV and PV completion criteria sample quantities and timing aligned with GVDP milestones (DV-IV PV VTC VDC SORP) and program build events.
Where analytical methods are proposed instead of physical tests review and approve analytical validation approaches and ensure they are captured in the Program-Specific ADVP&R and VCRI.
Align detailed pass/fail criteria validation system E2E architecture (DUT Tester- Report-Lab)

  • Execution & Automation:Develop automated test scenarios and scripts (e.g. CANoe Python VSPY Lauterbach etc.) for Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Deep understanding of GMW3097 (EMC) & GMW3172 (ENV) specifications tests identifying failures root-cause analysis etc.
  • Lead DRBTR activity with product design teams.
  • Issue/champion 5-phases see PRTSs to closure.


Supplier engagement & test plan approval

Review and assess supplier validation and environmental test plans (if changed by supplier) test facility capability (e.g. accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025/A2LA) and test procedures; request revisions as needed to meet GM requirements before granting approval.
Provide guidance to suppliers on component quantities and timing for DV PV and production validation builds; coordinate material requests and ensure that validation needs across all GM functions (Safety Vehicle Performance Engineering Marketing etc.) are considered.
Request and review full test reports and incident reports ensuring that non-conformances are documented root causes identified and corrective actions driven to closure.

Cross-functional integration & issue resolution

Work closely with Hardware Design Engineer Design Release Engineers (DREs) Technical Integration Engineers (TIEs) Performance Engineers Program Teams BOM Family Owners Validation Owners and Technical Specialists to define validation scope manage changes and ensure alignment to program targets and timing.
Support or lead DFMEA/DRBFM design reviews DRBTRs and other technical forums ensuring validation learnings are fed back into design and test plans.
Lead or support problem resolution for validation failures including test-to-failure analysis Weibull analysis (where applicable) and redesign/test-plan updates.

Documentation compliance and best practices


Ensure traceable program documentation for validation: ADVP&R VCRI test plans test reports validation scorecards (e.g. CG1801) and regulatory evidence are complete current and stored per GM record management standards.
Verify that validation plans and results address applicable regulatory and safety requirements for the component and that these are reviewed in the appropriate peer reviews and program gates.
Apply and help evolve GM validation best practices and standards (e.g. GMW3600 GMW3172 component CVP/CVP in CEMENT Appendix G-series processes).

Staff-level leadership

Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior Validation Engineers DREs and suppliers in interpretation of GM validation standards VCRI/ADVP&R development and test methods.
Represent component validation in cross-functional governance forums (PDTs design/validation reviews change control) and act as the escalation point for validation risk and trade-off decisions.
Identify and drive process improvements in validation planning data usage (e.g. surrogate data analytical methods) and use of tools/databases (CEMENT CICVAD Jira etc.) to improve efficiency and robustness.

What Youll Need:

Bachelors degree in Electrical Electronics Mechanical Mechatronics or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
Significant experience in component validation design release or related hardware roles within automotive or similar safety-/reliability-critical industries.
Demonstrated experience with GM engineering processes such as GVDP VeSCoM PRTS PCCR/ECR and program milestone execution.
Hands-on experience planning and executing DV/PV testing including environmental validation per GMW3172 and development of component Validation Plans (CVP/ADVP&R).
Strong background in DFMEA/DRBFM root cause analysis and test-to-failure / reliability demonstration methods.
Proven ability to work with suppliers and cross-functional teams across global regions including negotiating/aligning on validation plans timing and resource needs.
Excellent technical communication skills (written and verbal) including clear documentation of validation plans test results and technical recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience as a Component Validation Engineer (CVE) Validation Engineer Design Release Engineer or equivalent at GM (components with significant electronics/software content are a plus).
Familiarity with GM validation/supporting systems and standards such as CEMENT CICVAD CG1746 Appendix G2 G5 G6 CG2999/CG3000/CG4422 GMW3172 GMW3600.
Experience with CAN/Ethernet diagnostics and tools or with component software verification/validation where components include embedded software.
DFSS Red X or similar problem-solving / quality certifications.
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and influence validation strategy beyond own component or program.
