Title: Database Administrator
Reports to: Database Manager
Based at: Nairobi.
Job purpose:
To provide support performance Integrity and security of a database to deliver exceptional customer service.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities:
The key responsibility for this role is to ensure the optimal performance of Smart database and associated functionality and essentially ensure that the Smart databases meet user requirements.
Database Support & Operations
- Provide 24/7 support to ensure high availability integrity security and performance of Smarts databases.
- Assist with database maintenance installations configurations upgrades and patch management for Oracle MSSQL and MySQL environments.
- Perform daily backups verify data integrity and support restore processes.
Monitoring & Troubleshooting
- Monitor database logs performance and abnormal activities escalating issues as necessary.
- Provide first-level troubleshooting for database incidents and support customer service inquiries under defined SLAs.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate documentation of procedures configurations backup schedules and incident resolutions.
- Generate regular database performance reports and ensure compliance with database standards.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with senior DBAs internal teams and other departments to support business systems.
- Stay updated on Smart solutions current database trends and attend training to enhance skills.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Holder of a bachelors degree in lieu demonstrate experience in database administration and a professional qualification.
- An experience of 2 years working with PostgreSQL
- Strong PostgreSQL query writing tuning skills and shell scripting
- Hands-on knowledge of backup and recovery methods and tools
- Experience with high availability and disaster recovery including data replication
- Solid understanding of Linux and Windows Server environments.
- Familiarity with automation tools like Ansible Terraform or Kubernetes for DB deployment/management.
Skills knowledge and abilities
This role requires excellent database proficiency analytical skills and attention to detail. Due to the dynamic nature of business self-motivation and the ability to learn quickly are essential. Other requisite skills and competencies are listed below: -
- Good understanding of MSSQL MySQL and PostgreSQL database related utilities and tools
- Proficiency in underlying database operating systems including operations in both Windows and Linux environments with a bias to Linux
- Ability to perform both MSSQL MySQL PostgreSQL and operating system performance tuning monitoring and support
- Thorough Knowledge of MSSQL MySQL and PostgreSQL backup and recovery scenarios security management data integrity and resource management
- Sound understanding of the Smart business and value proposition to its customers
- Experience of working with multiple projects/tasks and the ability to prioritize on the fly
- Skill in customer service & support and training with demonstrated customer service orientation.
- Strong and well developed analytical problem-solving skills and report writing skills.
- Quick learner with demonstrated product knowledge and professionalism.
- Team player with ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other service delivery functions.
- Self-starter with possession of self-management and self-drive to complete tasks and engage other team members
- Proactive and highly organized with strong time management and planning skills.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines heavy workloads and remain calm under pressure with a high degree of individual responsibility all of which are implicit with the position.
