The Community Health and Wellbeing Officer (CHWO) position is responsible for the implementation and evaluation of Councils health promotion initiatives as derived through the Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan (MPHWP).  The position engages with the community to analyse and interpret emerging social issues and trends and provide advice and direction to Council and key stakeholders.  

What youll be doing:

  • Support the development and contribute to the implementation of key council planning documents including the Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan (MPHWP) and Hume Positive Ageing Strategy (HPAS).
  • Represent Council at internal and external stakeholder meetings and events.  Collaborate with stakeholders and bring information back to the area to ensure an effective response.
  • Engage and collaborate with local workplaces schools and community groups to implement best practice health promotion initiatives.
  • Utilise internal planning mechanisms that facilitate a health in all approach toward health and wellbeing outcomes for community.
  • Assist in the development of submissions to other levels of Government for resources which respond to priority health issues and actively advocate for local health needs.
  • In partnership with the Team Leader develop strategies and policies aligned with the vision that support and enable holistic responses to identified issues within Hume. 
  • Gather a wide range of inputs and conduct needs analysis on issues and the Portfolios priorities to support the development of appropriate strategies plans policies programs projects and initiatives.  
  • Provide regular progress reports and evidence to demonstrate achievement of outcomes for all assigned projects.
  • Design and manage databases to support the Social Justice Portfolio in delivering its purpose. 

The skills and experience youll bring to the role:

  • Experience in developing and implementing broad strategies to achieve health prevention objectives particularly in the context of influencing public policy health systems or population based behavioural change.
  • Experience of working within a diverse client base as well as new and emerging communities.
  • Experience in working on multiple programs projects and teams with diverse skillsets. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of social policy frameworks plans and strategies. 
  • Proven skills and abilities to analyse and interpret emerging social issues and trends.  
  • Demonstrated ability to review develop and implement improved systems and processes to enhance organisation efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills including an ability to write reports plans and submissions deliver oral presentations and use social media.
  • The ability to liaise with a wide range of health and welfare agencies and maintain effective partnerships.

Required Certifications & Qualifications (If required)

  • Tertiary or higher degree in Public Health Health Promotion Social Planning Community Development or similar field; and relevant experience or lesser formal qualifications with significant experience.
  • Current drivers licence.
