Job Description:
A Safety/EHS (Environment Health and Safety) Officer in a steel manufacturing company is
responsible for creating a Zero Harm environment by implementing monitoring and enforcing safety protocols in a high-risk industrial setting. They ensure compliance with statutory regulations (e.g. Factories Act OSHA ISO 14001/45001) while proactively identifying hazards related to heavy machinery hot work and chemical handling.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment:Conduct regular shop floor inspections Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) to identify unsafe conditions or practices.
- Compliance Monitoring:Ensure strict adherence to statutory safety regulations (Factories Act 1948 local rules) and internal safety SOPs.
- Permit-to-Work (PTW) System:Issue and monitor permits for high-risk activities including hot work confined space entry working at heights and heavy lifting.
- Incident Investigation:Investigate accidents near-misses and dangerous occurrences conducting root cause analysis (RCA) and recommending corrective/preventive actions.
- Safety Training & Promotion:Organize safety inductions toolbox talks and mock drills. Promote safety awareness through campaigns safety weeks and incentivized safety programs.
- PPE Management:Enforce the correct selection use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by employees and contractors.
- Safety Documentation:Maintain statutory records inspection reports training records and incident reports.
- Environmental & Industrial Hygiene:Monitor effluent quality (ETP) air ambient quality stack emissions and noise levels.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education:Bachelors degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Chemical/Electrical) or a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry/Physics).
- Safety Certification:A recognized diploma/degree in Industrial Safety (e.g. ADIS) is often mandatory. NEBOSH IGC or IOSH certifications are strongly preferred.
- Experience:27 years of relevant EHS experience with a focus on steel manufacturing foundry or heavy industry.
- Technical Knowledge:Deep understanding of ISO 45001 (OHS) ISO 14001 (Environment) and machine safety (lockout/tagout).
- Competencies:Strong communication skills (local language English) analytical ability for investigation leadership and the ability to influence behavioral safety.

- Hours:May involve shift-based work regular inspections and emergency response requiring flexibility.
