Trade tensions. Donald Trump. Canadas beleaguered relationship with the United States. Add it all up and theres rarely been a more important time to help our audience understand whats going on south of the border. Were looking for an exceptional leader and accomplished journalist to keep on top of it all and lead CBC News coverage of the United States.

As the Senior Producer of Assignment based in Washington D.C. you will oversee CBC News bureaus in Washington and New York.

Our two countries share more than the largest international border. From continental and transatlantic defence obligations; to arts and culture; to national security technology and the economy the two countries are inextricably this role you will lead on creating coverage plans that help Canadians make sense of their place in this new dynamic at a pivotal time.

Reporting to the Executive Producer of World News you make sure CBC News is offering the best in video audio and text journalism to new and existing audiences live and on demand.

You bring an intelligent curiosity to the role everyday as you work to identify develop and coordinate both daily coverage and special events. You know collaboration is key to the newsrooms success. Youre a critical link between CBC News and the journalists you support. You work closely with the Executive Producers and other leadership to manage deployments prioritizing the physical and mental well-being of employees.

You have an in-depth knowledge of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices ensuring newsgatherers are providing fair balanced accurate thoughtful and immediate coverage.

Youll work with colleagues across the CBC News division and Radio-Canada sharing both content and expertise across platforms and programs.


What youll be doing:

Youll be front and centre in driving journalism innovation and this role youll:

  • Editorial and Assignment Planning: You are a key decision maker in determining what stories we cover 24/7 and across platforms. While youre based in Washington you are plugged into whats happening across the U.S. scanning the competition digging into meeting minutes and creating calendars for upcoming events. You can pivot quickly to cover breaking and live news; and are equally adept at planning for future events and specials in collaboration with the CBC News World team.

  • Deployment & Resource Co-ordination: With support from the Executive Producer you deploy U.S. resources creating roadmaps budgets and travel when required. You connect with assignment producers across CBC News to coordinate coverage for programs and platforms integrating domestic teams to bolster coverage plans when required. You work closely with project teams to develop new workflows and set expectations for new projects such as the recently released podcast Two Blocks from the White House.

  • Bureau Leadership & Staffing: You are a key leader in the DC bureau. You connect regularly with senior leadership about staffing requirements interpersonal relationships and any necessary schedule changes. You communicate any issues that need addressing to senior leadership and also ensure your teams successes are celebrated widely. You are consulted on backfill and hiring decisions. You create a culture of collaboration and support ensuring the safety and well-being of the team is considered in every assignment.

  • Champion Audience Growth: Your decisions are focused on expanding our reach to new and younger news consumers and to deepen our engagement with all Canadians. You understand the pulse of Canadian audiences their habits and what they need from your coverage. You are able to translate insights and data into actionable content strategies for all platforms.

  • Uphold Journalistic Excellence: You have a deep understanding of CBCs rigorous Journalistic Standards and Practises. You help your team navigate complex ethical and legal considerations with grace and precision.

  • Foster Authentic Storytelling: You champion content that truly reflects the richness and diversity of perspectives ideas and real-life experiences. You inspire your team to think inclusively always asking whose voice is missing and you work diligently to close that gap. You collaborate with journalistic leaders across CBC News ensuring our daily coverage is reflective of the stories and issues that help Canadians make sense of their world.

  • Innovate & Strategize: You demonstrate daily the role of a public broadcaster in a media landscape proliferated with misinformation disinformation and rapidly evolving technologies. Verification is a core value. You lean into data and use it to drive audience-focused strategies for your team. You translate big ideas into tangible actions.

Were looking for someone who:

  • Has at least 5 to 8 years of recent significant leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment particularly in roles involving breaking news international coverage and overseeing large teams in a unionized environment. Experience with risk assessment and management is an asset.

  • Demonstrates exceptional critical thinking news judgement and a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues in journalism.

  • Is an astute strategist capable of translating audience insights and data into effective content decisions and programming results that meet the evolving needs of Canadian news consumers.

  • Finds solutions to a variety of technical resource and operational issues and can make decisions on tight deadlines; can effectively juggle multiple short and long term tasks and projects.

  • Is comfortable navigating rapid change troubleshooting complex situations and making swift decisions under pressure.

  • Brings a deep and nuanced understanding of international politics world events geography and history coupled with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.

  • Exhibits stellar communication and collaboration skills essential for working across diverse teams and regions.

  • Has a university degree or equivalent professional experience.

  • Is able to travel internationally and flexible to work varying hours including early mornings nights weekends and holidays to respond to the demands of live and breaking news.

This is a permanent full-time position based in Washington D.C. You are expected to be on-site most days however there is opportunity for hybrid work on occasion. External candidates must be able to legally live and work in the U.S.
