Purpose:
The purpose of a school nurse job descriptionisto define their critical role in supporting student health safety and academic success by managing illnesses injuries and chronic conditions. It outlines responsibilities like administering medication conducting screenings maintaining immunization records and acting as a liaison between families and healthcare providers.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide nursing care to address the health needs of students including emergencies.
- Participate in the development and implementation of health care plans as directed by the RN.
- Participate in the identification process of children with special needs as directed by the RN.
- Maintain student health records.
- Maintain immunization records and communicate with families about immunizations.
- Conduct vision and hearing screenings.
- Manage communicable/transmittable disease outbreaks.
- Participate in case management for at-risk children.
- Serve as a liaison between and resource for teachers administrators parents and community health partners.

Knowledge Skills Abilities
- LPN scope of practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
- Typical and atypical human growth and development of children and adolescents.
- Typical and atypical anatomy and physiology in children and adolescents.
- Common and less common pediatric health problems.
- Current treatments and medications for pediatric health problems.
- Skills in physical assessment use of stethoscope thermometer otoscope sphygmomanometer and glucometer.
- Skills and certification in CPR AED and basic first aid.
- Skills in word processing programs spreadsheet programs Infinite Campus and use of the Internet.
- Ability to work independently under the supervision of the school nurse.
- Ability to use critical thinking skills to assess plan implement and evaluate plan of care or intervention under the supervision of the school nurse.
- Ability to be self-directed autonomous flexible organized and to prioritize.
- Ability to set and meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate with children and adolescents parents teachers administrators and health care providers.
- Ability to adhere to federal and state statute and District Policy.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Equipment Used
- Computer calculator copier telephone/voice mail fax wheelchairs and other special needs equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Current license to practice as a licensed practical nurse in Montana.
- Current certification in CPR/AED and first aid.
Necessary special requirements:
- Montana Drivers license or the ability to obtain license within three months of hire date.
Physical and Mental Demands and Work Hazards
- Performs routine work.
- Regularly works inside with minimal temperature variations.
- Ability to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Frequently required to sit occasionally walk and stand and reach with hands or arms.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Carrying pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling.
- Significant fine finger dexterity
- Required to be able to hear conversations in loud and quiet environments.
- May be required to lift or carry up to 10 - 30 pounds on a routine basis with or without an accommodation.
- The employee frequently works within time constraints and must maintain attentiveness intensity.
- Frequently involved in interactions which require oral and written communications.

- Occasional travel/mobility between schools or between schools and the Administration office may be required.
