Note: Travel Requirements: Flexibility is required. We travel up to 10%. Possible conversion but no guarantee or timeframe commitment. Summary of Job:
The Scientist/Engineer is responsible for modeling new processes and process conditions to improve product attributes or reduce costs for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters. This role focuses on developing and applying analytical and numerical modeling tools to understand material behavior and optimize product design and manufacturing processes. The position requires strong expertise in solid mechanics numerical modeling and finite element analysis while collaborating with global research teams engineers and customers.
Must-have/Required skills:
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering Civil Engineering or related discipline with 4 years of relevant experience OR Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Civil Engineering or related discipline with 0 years of experience
- Strong expertise in solid mechanics and numerical modeling
- Experience with open-source Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software
- Solid understanding of loading conditions and structural strain analysis
- Strong mathematical and programming skills related to FEA and numerical simulations
- Experience using commercial modeling tools such as Abaqus Ansys or similar
- Ability to analyze problems and convert them into mathematical and computational models
- Experience validating models through experiments and data analysis
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Nice-to-have Skills:
- Experience with structural thin film mechanics material modeling and characterization
- Knowledge of thin film interface adhesion principles
- Understanding of mechanical behavior of soft materials such as gels and polymers
- Experience with process engineering and product engineering
- Familiarity with materials testing techniques and experimental methods
- Experience leading product performance testing experiments and data analysis
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Model new processes and process conditions to improve product attributes and reduce costs for glass and ceramic substrates and filters
- Develop or utilize analytical and numerical modeling tools to understand underlying material and process behaviors
- Perform thin film modeling to evaluate product performance and response to loading conditions
- Apply modeling methods such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Boundary Element Method (BEM) for product development design improvements manufacturing processes and failure analysis
- Lead and recommend product testing to ensure designs meet commercial engineering and manufacturing qualification requirements
- Mentor teams and recommend new capabilities or methods related to mechanical testing and measurement techniques
- Collaborate with business teams to address thin film concerns customer issues and product engineering challenges
- Conduct experiments to validate theoretical models and simulation results
- Write technical reports invention disclosures and publications
- Work closely with globally distributed researchers engineers and customers to support product development and problem-solving initiatives
Soft Skills:
- Excellent verbal written and presentation communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with globally distributed and multicultural teams
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
