Job Summary

Position Summary:

The Grader Operator (Temporary Contract) is a specialized role within the Public Works Department responsible for the precise maintenance and restoration of the Towns transportation network. Unlike industrial or heavy construction grading this position focuses on the delicate balance of maintaining residential and secondary roads ensuring proper drainage and enhancing public safety. Reporting to the Public Works Foreman the operator ensures that the Towns streets and alleys remain navigable and safe for residents throughout the shifting demands of the seasons.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate equipment with extreme caution in high-traffic residential areas around

    school zones and near pedestrians.

  • Perform finish grading on gravel roads and back alleys to maintain proper crown

    and shoulder specifications ensuring efficient water runoff.

  • Lead snow removal efforts including plowing streets winging back snowbanks to

    maintain road width and clearing intersections for visibility.

  • Support the transition from winter to spring by removing ice pack and assisting

    with the initial sweep of debris from municipal right-of-ways.

  • Conduct thorough daily inspections of the grader and associated attachments

    ensuring all fluid levels tires and safety lights are operational as well as

    changing blades.

  • Maintain accurate logs of hours worked areas graded and any equipment

    deficiencies or road hazards encountered.

  • This role may require minor physical labor such as: lifting weights exceeding 10

    kg and up to an approximate maximum of 20 kg walking on uneven surfaces

    stooping kneeling and crouching climbing stairs and ladders.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Class 3 or Class 1 Alberta Drivers License with Q Endorsement is preferred.

  • Candidates must successfully pass a Drug & Alcohol (D&A) test as a condition of employment.

  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check during the hiring process.

  • Proven experience operating a grader specifically in a municipal or public-sector environment is highly desirable.

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and early morning shifts.

  • Availability for on-call rotations and emergency call-outs.

  • Ability to handle long rotations during peak seasonal transitions (Spring breakup/Heavy snowfall).

  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and perform minor manual labor tasks associated with road maintenance when required.

The Town of Bonnyville employment policy requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment alcohol and Drug Testing.
