The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Kodiak!

What you will be doing:
This position serves as a member of the biological sampling team onboard the ADF&G Research Vessel Resolution during the bottom trawl survey around Kodiak Island the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. Responsibilities include:

  • Sorting identifying and enumerating all species captured
  • Collecting sizes and biological data from commercially important species such as crab scallops and many fish species
  • Assist with daily maintenance of survey equipment such as scales measuring boards sampling tables data loggers onboard computers including cleaning and mending nets
Additional duties include assisting with basic vessel maintenance such as cleaning and painting assisting with vessel loading and unloading of equipment and supplies needed for the vessels operation and survey sampling as well as freight to be delivered to or from field offices and other locations.

The survey teams primary responsibility is to accurately collect data from the shellfish and groundfish species captured which is provided to fishery managers and researchers to assess the health of our marine resources.

The information gathered from the trawl survey is essential to the management and harvest of commercial Tanner crab king crab Pacific cod walleye pollock and sablefish fisheries as well as providing valuable ecosystem information to researchers from multiple agencies and organizations.

Joining our team provides the incumbent with a unique opportunity to learn from experienced fishermen biologists and technicians while living and working at sea along the coast of Alaska around Kodiak Island the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.

The incumbent will gain experience in a variety of sampling techniques and learn to identify potentially over 100 different species. Their work will directly contribute to the ability of fishery managers to determine fishery openings for multiple species and areas in the Gulf of Alaska

The working environment you can expect:
This position is based out of Kodiak and works onboard the 98-foot ADF&G research vessel Resolution during the bottom trawl survey that takes place from June through September with multiple survey legs up to 5-weeks in duration.

While at sea the incumbent will live aboard the vessel with 6 other survey crew members as the vessel travels throughout the survey area (which spans from Kodiak Island to Unalaska Island) sharing stateroom and bathroom facilities with meals provided. Daily activities at sea consist of sampling up to 10 hauls per day between the hours of 7:30 AM and 8:30 PM and helping to maintain common spaces on the vessel. Requires extended periods of time (up to 5 weeks) working in the field aboard marine research vessels in potentially inclement weather

Who we are looking for:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • An interest in biology/ecology/fisheries biology
  • Experience working in a physically demanding environment such as onboard a sea-going vessel that requires physical strength and agility
  • Open communication style and good interpersonal skills to contribute to a team environment
  • Remote living experience
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules due to weather uncertainties or changing project demands

Special Note:
  • Valid Drivers License required.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification: Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
  • Requires completion of a Marine Safety course upon hire including pool training and survival suit use.


Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
