Nova Scotia Health is seeking expressions of interest for the role of Department Head (DH) for Surgery in the Eastern Zone.
Reporting to the Zone Medical Executive Director the Department Head is responsible for the medical leadership strategic direction and operational oversight of the Department of Surgery across the Eastern Zone. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with administrative and physician leaders to support high-quality surgical services effective physician engagement workforce planning quality improvement and departmental performance.
The Department Head provides leadership to Surgery Site Leads across the zone and plays a key role in advancing a culture of accountability professionalism patient-centered care and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
The Department Head Surgery Eastern Zone will:
- provide overall medical leadership for the Department of Surgery across the Eastern Zone
- work collaboratively with site leads operational leaders and other medical leaders to support safe sustainable and high-quality surgical services
- ensure department members comply with Nova Scotia Health medical staff bylaws rules regulations policies and professional expectations
- chair and maintain regular department meetings and provide meeting summaries or minutes as required to the Zone Medical Executive Director
- attend and contribute to relevant leadership medical staff and operational committees as assigned
- co-lead with the appropriate administrative leader strategic and operational planning for the department including service planning resource utilization and budget discussions
- work with Surgery Site Leads to support physician scheduling processes that maintain service continuity including vacation planning on-call coverage and locum coordination
- support physician human resource planning including recruitment retention succession planning and onboarding of new department members
- provide leadership in physician performance management including support coaching professionalism and where required complaint and discipline processes
- participate in monitoring quality standards of care patient safety and appropriate utilization of departmental resources
- support departmental involvement in quality improvement innovation and system transformation initiatives
- help coordinate the academic mandate of the department including support for medical learners and residency training within the zone
- support and encourage research activity and scholarly work within the department
- participate in clinical service planning at the zone and provincial level as required
- work with appropriate partners to support regular individual meetings and reviews for department members
- demonstrate a commitment to leadership development mentorship and the ongoing advancement of the department
