The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for two Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Kodiak Alaska!


What You Will Be Doing:

This position acts as the crew leader at a salmon counting weir in the remote Alaska wilderness from approximately May 18September 15. The incumbents will install maintain and remove a salmon counting weir. Remote field camp responsibilities include enumerating salmon passage through the weir collecting ASL data daily reporting of data to office staff upkeep of weir camp facilities participating in camp chores and maintaining a working relationship in a shared living environment.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Division of Commercial Fisheries salmon counting weir locations include Karluk River Ayakulik River Dog Salmon Creek and Upper Station on Olga Creek. These locations offer our field crews the opportunity to live and recreate in some of Alaskas most beautiful wilderness. Endless hours of fishing and hiking can be had right out your front door when daylight and work schedule allows. Our field sites include a dry cabin and banya solar power propane fridge/freezer/stove internet access and established foot paths to the weir sites. Weather ranges from inclement wind and rain in lower to mid-40 degrees to calm and sunny in the mid-70 degrees.

  • Room and board will be provided while in the field. However while stationed in the City of Kodiak ADF&G Bunkhouse (approximately 1.0 week/season) the successful candidate will be expected to provide their own food. The successful candidate is responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the City of Kodiak (ADQ).

  • Experience working at a weir
  • Experience identifying salmonids
  • Remote living experience
  • Experience with and the ability to operate firearms
  • Experience operating small skiffs
  • Experience living and working around bears
  • Experience working with power tools

Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms.

First aid/CPR

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
