SUMMARY:
The Mayors Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City governments chief financial agency. OMBs staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayors expense and capital budgets which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.
Within OMB the Policy and Operations Research Task Force is primarily responsible for analyzing fiscal and economic implications of the Citys policy initiatives and evaluating City agencies operations and programs as well as conducting ad-hoc quantitative analysis. Within this Task Force the Housing Transportation and Mobility Unit focuses on policy issues related to housing and mobility. The unit works closely with other units and task forces within OMB to support policy and operation analysis.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The primary project of this internship will examine how housing and population characteristics in New York City have changed over the past 30 years using data from the New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey (NYCHVS). The intern will assist with organizing and cleaning datasets compiling documentation and preparing data for analysis. A primary responsibility will be conducting descriptive analyses of housing characteristics (e.g. vacancy rates rent levels maintenance conditions) and demographic trends (e.g. age sex race distributions). When possible the analysis will explore patterns across different geographic levels from the city as a whole to boroughs and community addition to the main project the intern will have opportunities to contribute to other ongoing research projects within the unit. These may include studies related to eviction patterns parking and curb management public safety and other urban policy topics.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-Quantitative data analysis
-Experience with data cleaning and management
-Experience with statistical software (R Stata Python)
-Ability to interpret and communicate empirical findings clearly (written and verbal)
-Familiarity with geographic data or GIS (preferred)
REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college or university. Strong analytical research and communications skills are required. Candidates must have familiarity in MS Word and Excel
To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program undergraduate students must be enrolled or accepted into a college or university.
Compensation/Duration:
Summer Undergraduate Intern$17.50 per hour
Internships will run for 10 weeks from June 1 2026 to August 7 2026. The work must be done during the regular workday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. no evenings or weekends.
This is a hybrid position with in-person days located at OMBs offices at 255 Greenwich Street

Qualifications :
As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program June - August each year.
