The UnityPoint Health Des Moines Department of Emergency Medicine is a community-based practice with an academic tilt. Employed physicians provide coverage at 4 unique Emergency Departments with a variety of hospitals and patient populations offering physicians the chance to experience exceptional variety in their practice. The group is looking for a physician interested in practicing clinically across all four of its Emergency Departments.
Three of these EDs are within the Des Moines Iowa metro area: Iowa Methodist Medical Center (IMMC) Iowa Lutheran Hospital (ILH) and Methodist West (MW) Hospital. About 50 minutes east of Des Moines is Grinnell Regional Medical center. This is the newest of the four emergency departments and rounds out our provider experience with a unique and challenging rural medicine experience serving patients in Poweshiek and surrounding addition to clinical shifts the group encourages and rewards participation in teaching scholarly activity and non-clinical activities through appointments in graduate medical education and annual incentive programs.
Iowa Methodist Medical Center: A tertiary care facility with level 1 trauma center designation and primary stroke center certification. IMMC ED is an adult only emergency department built in 2016 with an annual census of 45000. During peak hours there is double and triple physician coverage with single APP coverage 24 hrs a day. Together with experienced nursing staff physicians provide care to a high acuity patient population with a full complement of subspeciality services available. Current residency training programs at IMMC include Internal Medicine General Surgery and Podiatry. Emergency Medicine residency was added in 2023 with the first class of residents to arrive in July 2024. Emergency Medicine residents will also rotate at ILH and Grinnell Emergency Departments.
Iowa Lutheran Hospital: A level IV trauma center serving East Des Moines and surrounding areas with availability of most medical and surgical subspecialties including a high functioning intensive care unit. ILH ED cares for all ages with an annual census of 25000. It is home to one of Iowas largest private based mental health facilities with most of these patients presenting through the Emergency Department. ILH is also home to the East Des Moines Family Medicine residency program.
Methodist West Hospital: Methodist West hospital is located in West Des Moines Iowa and is a center of excellence for Orthopedic and Maternity services. The MW ED is a state-of-the-art ED (built in 2008) with an annual census of 25000. Although there are fewer subspecialty services offered at MW this is easily navigated because of the interconnectedness with both IMMC and ILH patients allowing patients to be easily admitted to either of those locations.
Grinnell Regional Medical Center: This high functioning critical access hospital is located 50 minutes east of Des Moines and provides a unique and challenging rural medicine experience. It boasts 24/7 inpatient physician coverage for hospitalists and general surgery along with limited orthopedic urology ENT and Ob/gyn coverage. This location allows EM physicians to exercise their emergency medicine expertise in its purest form.
