General Summary:

Under the direction of the Senior Director Clinical Services the Manager Intensive Care and Medical Surgical Services assures service development personnel management and resource allocation and management controls in order to ensure consistent high-quality patient care in the ICU and inpatient medical surgical Departments.

Education Licensure Registration and Experience:

BS in Nursing Preferred

MS preferred

Five years of progressive management responsibility is desired

Current registration as an RN in state of Ohio (or eligibility to do so)

Knowledge of human resource management program development fiscal management skills and familiarity with regulatory and accrediting agency standards preferred

ACLS PALS preferred

Ability to mentor and coach staff in a way that will foster independent thinking and flexibility.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously. Flexibility and organizational skills essential.

Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines.

Significant demand to manage multiple jobs at one time. Ability to manage stress and critical decisions.

Essential Functions:

Defines standards of ICU and Inpatient Nursing departments that include the development implementation and evaluation of ongoing service programs that ensure quality nursing and patient care programs consistent with the hospital mission.

Maintains nursing operations by initiating coordinating and enforcing program operational and personnel policies and procedures.

Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.

Maintains department records reports and statistics and performs (or delegates) related duties; e.g. patient medical records and all related documents administrative reports supply and equipment inventories department costs and other budgetary information and personnel and other office files.

Investigates new techniques practices equipment and products.

Directs and supervises maintenance of department facilities equipment supplies and areas and ensures compliance with established standards and regulatory requirements.

Monitors compliance with regulatory accrediting and hospital policy for patient services and personnel safety.

Oversees the ICU and inpatient nursing department PI program which monitors and evaluates critical aspects of care.

Actively participates in service departmental and hospital wide committees as assigned providing ongoing communication.

Manages compliance with regulatory accrediting and hospital policy for patient services environment and personnel safety.

Achieves financial objectives by preparing an annual budget scheduling expenditures analyzing variances and initiating corrective actions.

Accurately identifies real/potential problems affecting the service line and implements solutions with follow through and communication.

Provides coaching to direct reports providing feedback counseling constructive critique of work facilitating the development of their problem solving and decision-making skills and documenting their job performance and results annually.

Follows progressive disciplinary action process (or oversees subordinates in doing so) in order to maintain productivity and/or performance standards.

Interprets/represents the practice and role of the Nursing Department to allied healthcare professionals and physicians effectively.

Maintains a cooperative relationship among healthcare teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.

Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.

Attends monthly staff meetings and participates in monthly rounding process with manager to assure effective and timely two-way communications.

Participates in and completes required department specific education and training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job-related hazards.

Follows safety and security policies including exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
