Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Financial Accountant the Financial Accountant plays a key role in ensuring accurate timely and reliable financial operations to support CoREs mission and strategic priorities. This role is responsible for day-to-day accounting activities overseeing month-end and year-end processes preparing financial reports and supporting budgeting and forecasting activities. It also contributes to strengthening and maintaining robust financial controls enhancing accounting processes and improving management reporting practices. This role offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment that supports professional growth and allows you to be instrumental in strengthening the financial foundations of CoRE.

Responsibilities:

1. Financial Operations Controls & Compliance

  • Administer accounts payable accounts receivable banking transactions expense claims and general ledger activities with accuracy and timeliness.

  • Reconcile bank accounts general ledger accounts subledgers and capital asset records; support periodic asset verification.

  • Contribute to the development maintenance and continuous improvement of internal controls financial policies and accounting practices.

  • Support compliance with applicable legislation accounting standards and Government of Alberta financial directives.

2. Financial Reporting & Audit Support

  • Support monthend quarterend and yearend close processes through journal entries reconciliations working papers asset schedules prepaids and accruals.

  • Assist the Senior Financial Accountant in preparing monthly quarterly and annual financial reports including variance analysis supporting schedules and financial summaries for leadership.

  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records in accordance with publicsector accounting standards Treasury Board directives Government of Alberta requirements and CoRE policies.

  • Contribute to yearend financial statements and audit preparation including coordination with the Office of the Auditor General of Alberta and external auditors.

  • Ensure documentation supports transparency audit readiness and public accountability.

3. Financial Systems & Backup Support

  • Assist with maintaining financial systems including chart of accounts updates user access coordination and dataintegrity checks.

  • Provide backup support for payroll processing procurement activities and contract administration.

  • Provide backup support for budgeting and forecasting activities during the Senior Financial Accountants absence or as required.

4. CoRE Priorities

  • Prepare briefing notes summaries and presentations for leadership as required.

  • Support internal communications related to financial matters and provide updates or background information upon request.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • An undergraduate degree in accounting.

  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or actively pursuing the designation.

  • A minimum of 8 years progressive accounting experience with a strong understanding of accounting and reconciliation and payables/receivables workflows.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Solid understanding and experience with the application and research of accounting policies practices and theories such as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • High attention to detail and accuracy with the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.

  • Team player with a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

  • Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Office Suite tools.

  • Experience using QuickBooks and cloud-based ERP systems is considered an asset.

  • Experience within the Government of Alberta or broader public sector is considered an asset.
