Description of Work

This position is located in the Pitt County Bridge Maintenance Unit. Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges culverts and pipes within Division 2. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. The employee will be expected to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The employee will be expected to work in and around heavy traffic near heavy equipment and with power tools. Qualified individuals should be familiar with and/or able to learn carpentry skills welding pipe fitting structure painting machine operation inspection of various materials that compromise state bridges large pipe or culverts utilizing small hand tools and power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently as needed. The recommended applicant must be able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. occasionally and 50 lbs. frequently.

Position duties will involve climbing bending and walking on uneven terrain. May include work during non-traditional work hours including nights weekends holidays and times of emergency. Selected applicants will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a Class A CDL with N endorsements and no restrictions. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be maintained through completion of on- the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49CFR383) within 360 days of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required. As a condition of employment release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALDCRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: Salary Grade: NC05 / Salary Range: 33902.00 - 59327.00.

Management prefers applicants with the following:

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices.
  • Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones.
  • Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation asphalt patching or snow and ice removal.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
