About the Company
Our client is a large chrome mining house with operations across South Africa. They are seeking an experienced Chief Safety Officer to join their operation in Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng Nation).
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring full compliance with SHEQ regulatory frameworks mining safety legislation risk management systems and governance requirements while driving a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement in health safety and environmental performance across the mine and processing plant.
Preference will be given to candidates who reside within the Royal Bafokeng Nation host labour sending area or Rustenburg Local Municipality.
Job Purpose
To lead and manage the Safety Health Environment Quality (SHEQ) and Wellness systems within the mining operation ensuring regulatory compliance risk mitigation legal adherence and continuous safety performance improvement across open cast mining and plant environments.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Governance & Compliance
- Implement monitor and maintain SHEQ management systems governance frameworks and ISO certification standards.
- Ensure full compliance with mining safety legislation regulatory requirements and corporate governance policies.
- Oversee risk management processes compliance monitoring and control frameworks.
- Perform the legal appointment function of Chief Safety Officer in accordance with applicable mining legislation.
- Ensure compliance with health safety environmental and quality regulatory standards.
Risk Management & Safety Assurance
- Conduct risk assessments hazard identification and mitigation strategies across mining and plant operations.
- Coordinate and participate in internal and external safety audits legal compliance audits and SHEQ inspections.
- Manage Quarterly HSE SIP and legal audits and implement corrective actions where required.
- Monitor compliance controls to ensure effective risk management and regulatory adherence.
Operational Safety Leadership
- Drive continuous improvement in safety performance through training behavioural safety programs and awareness campaigns.
- Lead initiatives to strengthen the safety culture within the mining operation.
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to safety teams and operational staff.
- Develop and maintain safety policies procedures and compliance documentation.
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement
- Compile and submit SHEQ management reports compliance reports and performance dashboards.
- Liaise with operational management regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders regarding safety compliance and performance.
- Support leadership in achieving safety targets and regulatory compliance objectives.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- A BTech or Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management Occupational Health or a related discipline is often preferred.
- Formal qualification in Safety Health Environmental Management or related discipline
- COMSOC 1 & 2 (Non-negotiable).
- Trade Test Certificate.
- A Mine Safety Officer Certificate issued by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).
- SAMTRAC Certification (Preferred).
- NEBOSH Diploma (Preferred).
- Exposure on ISO management systems or any other recognized SHE system
Experience
- 8–10 years’ experience in open cast mining and plant environments
- Strong experience in SHEQ compliance mining safety regulations and risk management
- Blasting ticket advantageous
Other Requirements
- Valid South African Driver’s License
- Computer literacy
- Ability to operate within a regulated mining compliance environment
- Preference will be given to candidates who reside within the Royal Bafokeng Nation host labour sending area or Rustenburg Local Municipality.
