Job Summary

WEHATS THE JOB 

The Diesel Mechanic is a contracted resource responsible for the operation of the diesel generators that produce electricity for the station and provide heat for much of the facility. The mechanic also repairs and maintains the station vehicles and heavy equipment as well as performs other equipment repairs.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • The Diesel Mechanic must complete additional training on new equipment as required. The training may be on-line at the  site or at another location.
  • The Diesel Mechanic must ensure that the required PPE is used and that all work is performed in a safe manner in accordance with federal territorial and municipal legislated health and safety requirements.
  • The Diesel Mechanic must perform all maintenance indicated by the manufacturer for each piece of equipment listed in Vehicles and Equipment List. This includes seasonal maintenance of heavy equipment or machinery that remained idle for part of the year.

Power Generation and Heat Recovery Services:

  • Operating maintaining and repairing a power generation facility with 410 kW diesel generators or similar in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
  • Performing monthly checks and minor maintenance on all auxiliary power generators.
  • Performing all other scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs including diagnosis and replacement of malfunctioning generator components.
  • Monitoring troubleshooting diagnosing and programing diesel generator computer controlled systems.
  • Compiling and maintaining an inventory of all tools parts and supplies associated with power generation.
  • Operating maintaining and repairing heat recovery systems.
  • Operating maintaining and repairing generator cooling systems such as radiators and exhausts.
  • Informing the Technical Authority in a timely manner when major repairs and overhauls will need to be performed by third party specialists.
  • Providing onsite support and assistance to third party specialists as and when required.

Fuel Storage and Supply Systems Services:

  • Monitoring fuel levels and reporting any discrepancies to the Technical Authority.
  • Checking and refilling fuel tanks as required.
  • Transferring fuel from bulk storage tanks to building tanks and vehicles while maintaining continuous visual monitoring of the fuel transfer process.
  • Assisting with the annual sealift resupply of bulk diesel fuel as and when required by the Technical Authority.
  • Transferring fuel between storage tanks for inspection repairs and cleaning purposes as and when required.
  • Inspecting fuel lines or valves for leakage and replacing faulty components.
  • Visually inspecting fuel storage tanks for leaks.
  • Completing weekly monthly and annual inspection reports of all fuel storage tanks associated piping and systems and submitting inspection results to the Technical Authority in a timely manner.
  • Inspecting fuel containment berms for damage and taking immediate action as well as reporting findings.
  • Ensuring fuel spill containment equipment and supplies are in proper repair and ready to be deployed if required.
  • Maintaining organizing and properly storing drummed products in the stations POL (Petroleum Oils and Lubricants) cache.
  • Containing recovering and storing minor spill materials and used POL products as well as glycol products to facilitate shipping to the South for disposal.

Vehicles Heavy Equipment and Portable Equipment Services:

  • Maintaining and repairing diesel powered heavy equipment (loaders graders etc.).
  • Maintaining and repairing diesel and gasoline powered vehicles (trucks vans etc.).
  • Maintaining and repairing diesel and gasoline powered all terrain vehicles.
  • Maintaining and repairing portable diesel and gasoline powered equipment (generators pumps heaters lighting etc.)
  • Verifying the operating condition of equipment and identifying and reporting any equipment issues to the Technical Authority without delay.
  • Locking out and tagging out or otherwise taking out of service any inoperable vehicles or equipment until such a time as the vehicle or equipment is repaired removed or replaced.
  • Cleaning and preparing vehicles and equipment for inspection by the authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Facilitating access and assisting inspectors during the required regulatory inspections of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Maintaining monthly service records repair records material and consumable costs and submitting records to the Technical Authority.
  • Performing pre-trip inspections of station vehicles and ATVs (including Sno Cat) as per manufacturers recommendations.
  • Performing major repairs and overhauls on vehicles and equipment when the work can be completed using onsite tools equipment and facilities.
  • Compiling and maintaining an inventory of hand tools consumables frequently used parts and other spare parts.

Additional Services:

  • The Diesel Mechanic resource to conduct routine checks of the stations power plant and other life support systems as well as a quick visual check of the runway each Sunday before noon local time.
  • Any deficiencies identified during the routine checks must be reported to the Technical Authority without delay.
  • The Mechanic must provide operator training for station personnel in the safe operation proper use and pre-trip inspection procedures of station vehicles ATVs and snowmobiles.

Other Service Requirements and Responsibilities (Shared):

  • Loading and off-loading freight from vehicles and aircraft.
  • Shipping receiving and stocking materials.
  • Preparing orders for the resupply of consumable items.
  • Maintaining an inventory of consumable materials non-consumable parts and tools and advising the Technical Authority of deficiencies in supplies without delay.
  • Participating in work planning sessions and communicating with the Technical Authority to ensure planned work will not interfere with other station activities.
  • Receiving and actioning work requests from the Technical Authority.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders.
  • Maintaining and providing detailed and up to date paper or digital records.
  • Maintaining cleaning and organizing workspaces including but not limited to the garage office and washroom the powerhouse office mezzanine and parts room the multipurpose warehouse and other outlying buildings.
  • Shoveling snow from doorways.
  • Participating in fuel drum cleaning and disposal program and maintain the drum washing and crushing equipment.
  • Ensuring all hand and power tools and equipment are properly maintained and functioning in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ensuring the security of all tools and maintain a loan book to identify tools borrowed and returned.
  • Inspecting all facilities regularly to identify any deficiencies or hazards and proposing solutions to the Technical Authority
  • Performing preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Leading or assisting in the recovery of stranded or broken-down vehicles.
  • Briefing the Technical Authority the Project Authority or other government representatives on any issues within the scope of the Contractors responsibilities.
  • Responding to fuel spills to recover product and to minimize damage to the environment.
  • Acting as a safety person for other staff members that are working alone and rendering first aid when required.

Qualifications :

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR 

  • The Diesel Mechanic must have a minimum of 5 (five) years of Arctic experience operating maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment. 
  • Minimum Valid Class 3 Drivers License with Clean Driving Abstract ( Class 1 is Preferred ) 
  • Following Ticket requirements:  Basic First Aid & CPR WHMIS Fire Extinguisher Use Restricted Radio License Confined Space Fall Protection. 
  • Great attitude and strong sense of working as a team and independently
  • Willing to work long rotations up to 6 weeks at a time
  • Ability to handle the following physical demands:
    • Lift carry push or pull up to 150lbs 
    • Climb ladders or stairs 
    • Stand walk squat kneel or sit according to task for extended periods of time 
    • Perform repetitive hand work requiring full use of both hands
    • Perform work with arms at full length 
    • Work with arms above shoulder height
