Job Description:
A Head of Automobile Department in a steel manufacturing company (or Head - Automobile Maintenance) is
responsible for the strategic management maintenance and operation of all heavy earth-moving equipment (HEMM) commercial vehicles and material handling machinery within the steel plant.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance Strategy & Execution
- Preventive & Breakdown Maintenance:Direct day-to-day preventive predictive and breakdown maintenance of heavy equipment like Dumpers Pay Loaders Hyva Excavators Forklifts Hydra and Cranes.
- Downtime Reduction:Develop maintenance procedures to ensure maximum machine availability and minimize downtime ensuring continuous operation in key areas like Raw Material Handling SMS and DRI.
- Troubleshooting:Diagnose complex mechanical electrical and hydraulic faults to implement corrective actions promptly.
2. Operations Management & Logistics
- Fleet Management:Supervise the operation and deployment of vehicles used for raw material transportation and internal logistics.
- SOP Compliance:Ensure strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) safety guidelines and environmental regulations for all automotive operations.
- Reporting:Generate daily/monthly performance reports regarding vehicle status fuel consumption and operational efficiency.
3. Team Leadership & Inventory
- Manpower Management:Lead and train a team of technicians mechanics and supervisors coordinating work across shifts.
- Spare Parts Control:Plan and manage the inventory of spare parts and fast-moving consumables to prevent maintenance delays.
- Vendor Management:Liaise with vendors for service contracts and the procurement of spare parts.
4. Budget & Safety
- Cost Control:Monitor expenses and manage the annual maintenance budget for the department.
- Safety Adherence:Maintain a high standard of safety ensuring proper work permits and safety equipment are utilized during maintenance tasks.
Required Qualifications
- Education: in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering (often preferred) or a Diploma in Automobile/Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience:1020 years in heavy industry specifically managing automobile maintenance in a steel plant or large construction project.
- Skills:Expertise in hydraulics pneumatics and diesel engine repair; strong leadership troubleshooting and proficiency in ERP systems (e.g. SAP).
