The job of the Bus Driver- Trainer is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and school-related activities while also serving as a DPS certified instructor in compliance with Department of Public Safety (DPS) regulations. This position provides instruction and training to new and current bus drivers in the classroom during pre-trip/post-trip inspections (PPT) and behind-the-wheel ensuring adherence to all state federal and district transportation policies and safety standards.
This job reports to Director of Transportation.
Essential Functions:
Driving Responsibilities:
Operate a school bus on a designated route following all traffic laws and district policies.
Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any mechanical issues.
Maintain order and safety on the bus ensuring students follow established rules.
Safely load and unload students including those with special needs using appropriate
procedures.
Respond appropriately to emergency situations on the bus.
Training Responsibilities:
Deliver DPS-certified classroom instruction for new and current drivers ensuring full
compliance with Arizona DPS curriculum requirements.
Conduct hands-on Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspection (PPT) training emphasizing
regulatory compliance and safety standards.
Provide behind-the-wheel instruction coaching new drivers on proper driving techniques
safety protocols and route navigation.
Evaluate trainee performance and readiness for certification or route assignment.
Maintain accurate training records and submit necessary documentation to the
Training/Referral Coordinator.
Assist in organizing and leading in-service training sessions and safety meetings.
Monitor and mentor newly licensed drivers during probationary periods.
Other Functions:
Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Ability to instruct motivate and evaluate adult learners.
Thorough knowledge of traffic laws school bus regulations and DPS training standards.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Proficient in recordkeeping and reporting training outcomes.
Working Conditions:
Exposure to varying weather conditions.
Must be able to sit stand walk bend and lift up to 50 lbs.
Flexible hours including early mornings and occasional evenings/weekends for training.

Arizona DPS Certified School Bus Driver
Valid Arizona Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.

DPS-certified PPT Trainer and/or
DPS-certified Behind-the-Wheel Instructor
Minimum of 1 years of experience as a school bus driver
Clean driving record and ability to pass a criminal justice fingerprint/background check and drug screening
