Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) is NATOs strategic-level command responsible for the planning preparation conduct and execution of Alliance operations missions and activities. The Command Group provides support coordination administrative services and specialist advice to SACEUR DSACEUR and the Chief of Staff.
The Historical Office (HIS) serves as the institutional memory of SHAPE and Allied Command Operations (ACO) producing historical studies chronologies research and archival support. SHAPE Archives and HIS are jointly engaged in major declassification and digitization initiatives to preserve and make accessible NATOs historical holdings.
The incumbent supports both the Historical Office and the ACO Archivist in the preservation declassification digitization and organization of SHAPEs archival collections. Key responsibilities include:
Supporting the declassification and public disclosure of major historical document sets including SHAPE Histories () and Balkans Records ().
Assisting with ad hoc declassification and disclosure requests.
Supporting research requests from internal and external researchers.
Assisting the ACO Archivist in implementing NATO information management policies and directives.
Contributing to the digitization of archival collections and the development of comprehensive archival holdings for SHAPE missions operations and exercises.
Liaising with SHAPE offices on archival practices and preservation.
Assisting in the creation of catalogues indexes and archival databases.
The role may require occasional duty travel within NATO boundaries. Work is performed in a standard office environment.
Professional Experience
Background in library information or archival sciences (ISCED 322A) ideally with experience in a related function within an international organization.
Ability to perform routine archival and information management tasks under supervision using established systems and processes.
Education / Training
A university degree (BA) in History or Archival Studies.
Ability to use digital tools (MS Office Suite) to create databases catalogues and indexes.
Security Clearance
NATO Secret.
Languages
English: SLP 3333 (Listening Speaking Reading Writing).
Work at SHAPE is conducted primarily in English.
Masters degree in History or Archival Studies.
Experience in information management and data protection.
Experience working in a military environment ideally NATO.
Experience in an international organization.
Strong organizational skills attention to detail and ability to work methodically.
Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders.
Reliability discretion and respect for handling sensitive information.
The incumbent will support major declassification and digitization projects contribute to NATO Archives Committee initiatives and assist in the longterm preservation of SHAPEs institutional memory.

Salary: the remuneration of temporary personnel will be specified in their contracts. It is exempt from taxation in the Host Nation.
Benefits package: temporary personnel are covered by a benefits package which consists of an additional sum of 12% of basic salary for pension purposes basic medical and accident insurance provided under the NATO Group insurance contract (death and invalidity). The total premium for the medical and accident coverage in 2025 will be at 2.57% of the temporary staff members salary (2.32% for the medical benefits and 0.25% for accident) payable 1/3 by the temporary personnel and 2/3 by the Organisation.
For staff eligible under NATO rules there is also a dependent child allowance and coverage for dependent children for medical benefits.
