The Laboratory Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the overall operations of the Clinical Laboratory. This position is responsible for performing high-quality phlebotomy services executing waived and moderate complexity laboratory testing in accordance with CLIA regulations and providing essential assistance to Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS). Duties include specimen collection processing data entry equipment maintenance inventory support and ensuring compliance with laboratory safety quality and regulatory standards.
The role requires strong technical skills attention to detail professional communication and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced healthcare environment while upholding Coffeyville Regional Medical Centers commitment to patient-centered care.
JOB DUTIES
Perform venipuncture capillary and special collection procedures following CRMC and CLSI standards.
- Accurately verify patient identity using two-identifier protocols and maintain strict specimen integrity.
- Correctly label document and prepare specimens for transport or in-house analysis.
- Perform waived and moderate complexity testing (e.g. urinalysis POCT coagulation chemistry) in compliance with CLIA and manufacturer standards.
- Participate in quality control calibration proficiency testing and proper documentation of results.
- Assist MLS staff by preparing reagents setting up instrumentation and processing specimens for analysis.
- Organize stock and rotate supplies ensuring proper inventory levels dating and storage conditions.
- Maintain cleanliness of phlebotomy and laboratory workspaces including disinfection equipment upkeep and biohazard handling.
- Perform LIS data entry order verification result routing and documentation with accuracy and confidentiality.
- Collaborate with nursing providers and MLS staff to ensure timely and efficient specimen flow.
- Respond promptly to STAT urgent or time-sensitive requests and support critical care workflows.
- Provide patient education and instructions for special collections (e.g. 24-hour urine stool studies).
- Uphold all CRMC OSHA CAP CLIA and infection-control policies.
The Laboratory Assistant assumes other responsibilities as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Strong phlebotomy technique and knowledge of specimen requirements for diverse test methodologies.
- Understanding of waived and moderate complexity testing QC principles and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate professionally with patients staff and providers.
- Ability to prioritize multitask and maintain accuracy under pressure.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology infection control and biosafety principles.
- Proficiency with computers including LIS systems EMR platforms and standard office software.
- Ability to move position self consistently operate various types of equipment able to detect/observe/identify details at close or distant range with or without accommodations as well as exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally and or 10 pounds of force frequently or negligible constantly. Walking or standing to a significant degree or sitting constantly and pushing/pulling controls
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- BLS certification required.
- Phlebotomy certification through ASCP NPA ASPT or equivalent preferred.
- Prior experience in phlebotomy or clinical laboratory preferred.
- Knowledge of laboratory operations specimen processing and regulatory requirements preferred.
