Job Summary

Description

Provide academic support in the areas of Science Technology Engineering and Math to students through one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions. Facilitate study sessions focused on reinforcing key concepts building critical thinking and improving problem-solving skills. Assist students with homework test preparation and class projects. Support academic success by offering individualized instruction as well as group sessions designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of course material

Example of Duties

  • Tutor students referred from curriculum classes;
  • Meet with students in one-on-one small group drop-in and/or classroom tutoring formats to support student learning;
  • Support monitor and assess students use of successful learning strategies;
  • Maintain accurate records of student use of tutorial centers as required for ASC data collection and reports;
  • Participate in tutor training sessions activities;
  • Abide by the ASCs policies and procedures and communicate ASC policies and procedures to ASC visitors;
  • Abide by the Tutoring Code of Ethics and Guidelines;
  • Assist other ASC employees when needed;
  • Provide a student-centered service-oriented and professional atmosphere;
  • Assist with other ASC duties as needed for example creating and organizing materials making recommendations on needed supplies or equipment welcoming students and colleagues to the ASC participating in trainings and other related certification activities; and preparing reports;
  • Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Coordinator or Director in meeting the needs of the program department division and the college

Typical Qualifications

  • Masters Degree preferred Bachelors Degree required in the subject area to be tutored
  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System;
  • Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective tutoring;
  • Competence in computer technologies such as word processing spreadsheets presentation programs and distance education technologies;
  • Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students and colleagues;
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community
