Job Summary

Overview: The basic job function of a service captain is to oversee and support the front-of-house team including servers bussers and other restaurant staff. Service captains are responsible for welcoming and seating guests managing orders providing recommendations and ensuring that guests needs are addressed quickly and efficiently. They help maintain a smooth workflow uphold service standards and contribute to a positive guest experience.


Key Responsibilities include the following. (Other duties may be assigned)


  • Follow and promote the Nolans Way.

  • Greet all customers and facilitate the flow of the reception and dining areas.

  • Accommodate and document the needs of customers; communicate these needs to the staff to ensure guest satisfaction.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of guest contact areas.

  • Oversee and mentor the ongoing training process of all FOH staff.

  • Monitor and ensure that dining guests are served in a manner that meets the standards set by Nolans.

  • Assist staff when busy by expediting food assisting bar service pouring water bussing tables etc.

  • Investigate and resolve food quality and service complaints.

  • Check in with guests while at the table and resolve any issues they have to make sure customers leave satisfied and happy.

  • Responsible for providing discounts and adjusting POS transactions when necessary.

  • Handle disgruntled employees by communicating and working with the Operations Manager to offer suggestions and solutions that follow the companys policies and procedures.

  • Oversee and monitor portion control standards of food and beverages for the staff.

  • Communicate with the Operations Manager to address any areas of issue or concern for scheduling complaints and/or any other front-of-house needs.

Language Ability:

Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers clients customers and the general public.


Math Ability:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions.


Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully an individual should be able to use a POS system and be able to use word processing software; spreadsheet software; inventory software; and order processing systems.


Work Environment:

The work environmental characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential skills for this job.


While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to work in high precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.


The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use their hands and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with their hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit; frequently required to climb or balance and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Education and Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two to four years related experience and/ or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
