With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care the Certified Surgical Technician functions as a member of the intraoperative healthcare team. Performs specific tasks to assist the surgical team in ways that values the uniqueness of each individual and addresses the physical psychological emotional and social needs of the diversity of patients served by Jefferson Health and is competent to provide care for all patient populations. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the sterile field. The Technician accurately and efficiently anticipates surgeons needs intraoperatively by applying comprehensive knowledge of operative procedures equipment anatomy and surgeons preferences. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) works closely with all perioperative team members during the preoperative intraoperative and post-operative care of the surgical patient. The Certified Surgical Technician also supports decontamination and sterile supply area and maintains courteous and professional interactions with the patients and staff. The Certified Surgical Technician will also be required to precept.

Job Description

  • Interacts with co-workers visitors and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Recognizes the patients their family/designated care partner(s) in providing safe compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patients personal preferences priorities needs and cultural beliefs and values.
  • Communicates with and supports the interprofessional team patient family and designated care partners.
  • Inspects Operating Room (OR) for cleanliness and secures sets up and prepares OR equipment instruments and supplies which are required for surgical procedures.
  • Participates in team time out and is an active participant and advocate for patient safety and high quality care in the perioperative setting.
  • Provides assistance with gowning and gloving of Surgical team including the Surgeon
  • Assist with preparation of the sterile field including draping of the patient and maintaining sterile field integrity
  • Gives a thorough report to relief personnel on status of procedure instruments materials and any other pertinent information to insure a smooth transition of personnel during the surgical procedure.
  • Counts all sharps sponges and instruments with the circulating nurse prior to during and after the surgical procedure. Follows the policy on how counts are performed and initiates corrective action when count is incorrect
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient unit operations.
  • Helps maintain a safe neat and clean environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care in the Operating Room.
  • Acts as primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required or preferred.

Education - Required

  • Graduate of a surgical technician training program.

Experience - Preferred

  • Prior surgical technician experience preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities - Required

  • Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient family and/or designated care partner in care.
  • Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts tools and techniques ability to effectively transmit receive and accurately interpret ideas information and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Uses the language of partnership with patients and families engaging them in their health and health care.
  • Understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use industry standards policies and procedures relevant to function and organization.
  • Knowledge of the physical environment and full spectrum of activities in developing and maintaining physical facilities.
  • Knowledge of the risks faced by patients in a healthcare environment and the ability to take steps to reduce these risks.
  • Knowledge of the common types of equipment or devices used in the healthcare industry and the ability to use these in patient care.
  • Knowledge of surgical assistance techniques and ability to successfully complete surgical procedures in compliance with applicable health and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply appropriate policies procedures and management methods to maximize operating room efficiency and productivity.

Licenses and Certifications - Required

  • BLS - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
  • Surgical Technician must maintain required certification
