Job Summary

  • Two (2) years diploma in Horticulture or a related field
  • 3 years related work experience in landscape maintenance including pesticide application

Assets:

  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist credential
  • Alberta Pesticide Applicators License (Landscape industrial and /or Agricultural
  • Completion of Leadership training or supervisory courses
  • Experience with various software platforms such as SAP Google SuiteDavey Tree Keeper and Posse

  • Ability to lead coach and motivate a large diverse workforce
  • Skill in making independent decisions and adapting work plans in response to unforeseen field conditions or equipment issues
  • Strong written and verbal skills for effective interaction with collaborators and team members
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks manage budgets and ensure work plans are executed on time
  • Skilled in the operation of specialized vehicles and associated forestry equipment.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator and compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment including medical monitoring is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel-toe boots gloves goggles sunscreen and coveralls
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
  • This role works primarily in an outdoor setting in the summer.
  • Exposure to environmental conditions including extreme temperatures inclement weather dust poor air quality noise light variation vibrations chemicals (herbicides fuels or oils) animals and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs expectations and emotional states
  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing walking kneeling bending stooping crouching lifting items up to 50 pounds pushing pulling reaching using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
  • Hours are 8 hours days five days a weeks

Join our team as a Crew Leader for Planting Operations South and play a vital role in growing Edmontons urban forest! This position is perfect for a dedicated professional who enjoys the balance of strategic planning and active field leadership. By joining the Parks and Urban Forestry branch you will contribute directly to the Citys environmental targets and help shape the green canopy of our city for generations to come.

As the Planting Operation South Crew Leader you will provide essential leadership to field staff dedicated to tree planting initiatives. During the summer your focus will be on the direct supervision of crews ensuring that planting activities are performed safely efficiently and to the highest the winter months your role shifts toward critical planning and forecasting to prepare for the upcoming planting season. You will be responsible for building work plans determining planting locations and coordinating the necessary labor and equipment. This role is instrumental in ensuring our forestry operations align with the City Plan and environmental goals. You will also act as a key problem-solver navigating utility conflicts and logistical challenges to keep our crews productive.

What will you do

  • Provide daily instruction supervision and hands-on leadership to work crews in the field.
  • Develop annual and seasonal work plans including determining planting locations and building crew schedules.
  • Ensure all field staff strictly adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) standards and environmental protocols.
  • Manage ground disturbance activities and solve complex site-specific utility conflicts.
  • Lead performance management coaching and mentoring for team members to foster a supportive work environment.
  • Coordinate fleet equipment and materials daily to meet service requirements.
  • Professionally communicate and address the needs of community partners and interested parties.
  • Review and approve timecards maintain worksite logs and complete reports on finished work.
  • Performing other related duties as required
