Job Summary

Overview

The individual who occupies this position is the Campus Dean for Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Montana an additional site of the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM). The Campus Dean is appointed by the President of Touro College and University System upon his/her nomination by the Executive Dean and the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost for Graduate and Professional Divisions of Touro University. This person reports to the Executive Dean. The employment contract will specify title terms of appointment length renewal and removal for cause. The overall responsibility is to direct the daily operations of TouroCOM-Montana to achieve excellence in all of the programs of the College. The Dean shall be responsible for any assignment that shall be given to him/her by the Executive Dean.


The Campus Dean serves as Chief Academic Officer for the campus and implements the campuss academic administrative and financial policies subject to the review and approval of the President the Board the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and the Executive Dean. This person is responsible for the successful planning implementation and evaluation of policies and programs that ensure the success of the educational research and service missions of the Montana COM. To accomplish this this person may delegate to the appropriate faculty and staff within the COM. This person is the principal spokesperson and representative of TouroCOM-Montana and exercises overall responsibility for development and advancement activities. This person is responsible for the preparation of the budgetary proposals for review and approval by the Executive Dean that will ensure adequate resources for fulfilling the mission of the medical school according to the principles of sound academic and administrative management. This person may consult with individuals or groups within or external to the College in carrying out this responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Planning - Works with the other TouroCOM Deans to develop academic research and service plans that further the mission and goals of TouroCOM. The Campus Dean may establish such committees and groups as necessary to plan and carry out stated administrative policies and academic research and service goals of the Institution. Reviews the goals and objectives of all academic research and service programs on at least an annual basis to ensure their agreement with the TouroCOM mission and goals. Will pursue undergraduate and graduate medical education affiliations and slots. Management ensures that human and fiscal resources are dedicated to achieving the academic research and service goals of the program and also facilitates school-wide communication to ensure smooth functioning of all academic programs.
  • Teaching and Scholarly Activity - Responsible for establishing the climate that encourages and rewards excellence in teaching and research. Works closely with the other TouroCOM- Montana Assistant/Associate Deans to develop programs that enforce multi-disciplinary approaches to teaching and research while contributing to the TouroCOM mission.
  • Space Allocation - Reviews the facility and space needs of the academic components and in consultation with the other TouroCOM-Montana Assistant/Associate Deans of each unit is responsible for facility assignments of all academic programs. The Campus Dean collaborates with the Executive Dean and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost (as necessary) to ensure careful coordination of academic space.
  • Evaluation of Performance - Evaluates the other TouroCOM-Montana Deans of each academic component and ensures that each carries out the responsibilities established for the program. This person reviews the evaluation of each academic component including Faculty and staff reviews as well as programs and ensures that the programs and activities within the component reflect the academic goals and policies of TouroCOM; communicates these evaluation findings to the Executive Dean.
  • Service - Works closely with the TouroCOM-Montana Assistant/Associate Deans to ensure that service responsibilities are met through participation and community service activities that reflect that commitment to the mission goals and programs of TouroCOM. Also ensures that faculty and staff (as appropriate) participate in COM committees and where appropriate are encouraged to participate in university-wide service.
  • COM Committees - May serve as ex officio member of all standing committees and ad-hoc committees related to the academic research and service missions of TouroCOM.
  • Faculty Recruitment - Recommends faculty for employment and appointment within the medical school. Ensures that procedures for faculty recruitment are in accord with the goals and policies of the medical school and the University.
  • Resources - Assists the other TouroCOM-Montana Assistant/Associate Deans and applicable chairpersons in obtaining resources for the development of faculty members of the medical school and supports the other TouroCOM-Montana Deans and chairpersons in seeking and identifying institutional and external resources for development activities.
  • Evaluates - On at least an annual basis the other TouroCOM-Montana Assistant/Associate Deans the department chairs and other designated program directors of each academic component to ensure that each carries out the responsibility established for the position. Reviews the evaluation of each academic component of the medical school and ensures that the programs and activities within each component reflect the academic goals and policies thereof. Also reviews the evaluations of COM faculty and staff prepared by others.
  • Cooperates with appropriate state and local agencies professional organizations and accrediting bodies to perform the required self-studies and provide necessary reporting and information relating to medical programs
  • Community Relations - Manages and builds relationships with the community community advisory board and is present when possible for key community events. Builds student scholarship support and other identified initiatives.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine required.
  • The Campus Dean must hold a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from a COCA accredited school be AOA or ABMS board-certified (at some point in their career) and hold an unrestricted medical license at some time in their career free of disciplinary actions or sanctions while licensed.
  • The Campus Dean is to have a minimum of five years experience in the academic medical education field at an institution of higher learning leading to a DO or MD degree or the equivalent thereof as deemed acceptable by the President of Touro.
  • The Campus Dean must have experience in academic leadership and management of personnel. This person will have experience managing the operational human resources and clinical requirements needed to effectively operate an additional location campus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • The Campus Dean/Associate Dean is to have a minimum of five years experience in academic medicine or the equivalent thereof as deemed acceptable by the President of Touro.
  • This person will have demonstrable expertise in planning delivery and assessment of the preclinical component of a medical school curriculum and be familiar with Flipped Classroom methodology.
  • This person will have experience managing the financial physical and human resources needed during the pre-clinical and clinical years of medical education.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word Excel PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Internet Research

Certifications/Licensures

  • American Osteopathic Association required
  • American Board of Medical Spec required
  • AOA or ABMS Board certified (at some point in career).
