Job Summary

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a regulated health care professional who is accountable and responsible for providing quality patient focused nursing care to patients who are identified as less complex demonstrate more predictable outcomes and are at lower risk for negative outcomes in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit. As part of the inter-professional health care team the RPN will practice according to the nursing practice expectations set by Osler the regulatory practice standards of the College of Nurses and the legislative requirements set by the Regulated Health Professions Act.

Accountabilities:

  • Safe nursing practice in all aspects of the nursing process: assessment planning implementation and evaluation of patient care
  • Professional patient-centred care to ensure patient safety and physiological and psychological well-being
  • Providing care in a compassionate and caring manner within a diverse cultural environment
  • Practicing according to the infection control and prevention measures
  • Responding to emergency situations by recognizing changes in patients health status and consulting appropriately when necessary using transfer of accountability principles
  • Providing health teaching to patients and families including thorough discharge instructions to ensure the continuity of care in the community

Qualifications :

  • Recent experience within the last five years with a minimum of two years in a child and adolescent unit required
  • Certificate in Mental Health Nursing preferred
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development required
  • Knowledge of community supports and resources preferred

Core competencies:

  • Current registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Sound knowledge of nursing process theory and responsibilities to the nursing profession and must be able to work to the full scope of practice of a Registered Practical Nurse
  • CPR-HCP
  • Medication Administration certificate and patient assessment course required for RPNs graduating prior to 2005 (certificates must be submitted with applications and prior to the interview phase)
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication problem-solving conflict-resolution and decision-making skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an inter-professional team
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient and family-centred care
  • Demonstrated experience with patient and family health teaching
  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated high level of professionalism organizational and critical-thinking skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development as it applies to the profession and related field
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced dynamic environment
  • Exemplary clinical practice within an inter-professional team to develop appropriate strategies for patient care
  • Excellent physical assessment skills
  • Ability to prioritize patient care needs and make autonomous decisions to ensure timely patient care delivery
  • Ability to promote a healthy work environment and practice excellent client safety guidelines
  • Knowledge understanding and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Ability to learn and work with information systems/technology
  • Must demonstrate Oslers Values of Respect Excellence Service Compassion Innovation and Collaboration
  • May be required to travel and work between all Osler sites
  • Excellent attendance punctuality and work record

Additional Information :

DURATION: Approximately twelve (12) months or until the previous incumbent returns.

Hours: Currently Days/Evenings 8 and 12 hour shifts including weekends and statutory holidays required (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

Salary:
Minimum: $36.08 per hour
Maximum: $39.02 per hour
