POSITION SUMMARY
The School Nurse attends to the individual health needs of students; writes and implements health care plans for students with special health needs; ensures district state and federal health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues; serves as a health care resource to teachers staff and administrators; facilitates mandated health screenings and identifies health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow-up treatment.
This job reports to the School Principal or designee.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Administers first aid medication and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill medically fragile and/or injured children.
- Assesses individual students health condition(s) to determine acuity and specific needs to ensure safety and well-being.
- Assesses the general student population for the purpose of identifying health needs and creating a general student health administration plan and recommendations for the school system.
- Assists other personnel as may be required to ensure an efficient and effective work and educational environment.
- Collaborates with parents students staff administrators health care providers and/or other agencies to promote needed health treatments for students secure information and comply with legal requirements and standardized nursing practices.
- Conducts or facilitates programs and/or activities (e.g. hearing/vision screening health education registration etc.) to ensure compliance with local state and federal health and educational requirements and provide information and guidance to others.
- Maintains a variety of health-related records (e.g. student health care plans medical emergency cards district health materials student immunization records training information and/or other records) for the purpose of ensuring student health records are current and in compliance with local state and federal laws and ensuring that general operational health services records are properly maintained and archived.
- Maintains contact with persons (e.g. parents guardians legal authorities health officials school administrators and/or staff) for the purpose of alerting them to any changes in student health conditions general health conditions and/or referring students or situations for further medical/emotional intervention as needed.
- Participates in various meetings workshops and seminars (e.g. IEP meetings monthly school nurse meetings parent meetings etc.) to gather and share information and/or improve skills/knowledge.
- Prepares various written materials to document activities provide written references and/or convey information.
- Prepares student health plans (e.g. emergency care plans) to address students health needs implementing health care directions from parents/guardians and/or health care providers.
- Refers students/persons requiring routine and/or immediate medical attention to provide needed routine health services and/or respond to emergencies.
- Reports incidents (e.g. fights suspected child abuse suspected substance abuse etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students personal safety a positive and safe learning environment and adhering to Education Code district and/or school policies.
- Relays students with reportable contagious diseases to local and/or other public health authorities for the purpose of complying with legal reporting requirements and supporting a safe and healthy work and learning environment. Submits reportable student concussions to the DOH as required.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate health and/or safety concerns.
- Review student medical information presented from school sites for the purpose of evaluating individual student needs and assisting each school with the accurate maintenance of student records.
- Supervises assigned personnel (e.g. training evaluation interviewing assigning tasks etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that functions are completed within district performance standards.
- Trains general district staff regarding specific health conditions (e.g. diabetes allergies asthma etc.) for the purpose of ensuring staff have information to effectively deal with students with health conditions.
- Trains personnel that work directly with student health needs (e.g. administering medications specialized procedures allergy treatment feeding administration catheterizations etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that district personnel have the necessary knowledge to perform their functions in compliance with district state and federal requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid Washington State Registered Nurse License
- Washington State ESA School Nurse Certification
- CPR/First Aid Certificate
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Able to administer first aid and emergency medical needs of injured or medically fragile students; adhere to safety practices; apply assessment instruments; operate standard office equipment using pertinent software applications; prepare and maintain accurate records; utilize database systems for maintaining health-related records.
- Specific knowledge of safety practices and procedures; childrens immunization status; community health resources; health standards and hazards; Nurse Practice Act; and RCWs pertinent to school health care.
- Knowledge of general office practices and use of Word Excel Email and related tools.
- Ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals work with a variety of data and utilize various job-related equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling; frequent stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting 40% walking and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
