This is a full-time in person position. The Prop Apprentices are an integral component of a dynamic and collegial Prop team in support of Juilliards robust performance schedule. Working in the Prop Shop will encompass many facets of prop design procurement and construction. Apprentices will have opportunities to explore traditional craft techniques and digital-age tools. The apprentice will complete carpentry soft goods sculpture assemblage and graphics projects as well as interpret designs through research and shopping in and around New York City.

Compensation:

The salary is $18.50 per hour for 40 weeks or a contracted amount of $29600.00 for the school year.

This program provides immersive training for emerging performing arts technicians and administrators addressing the need for practical training in the field. For over four decades it has prepared recent graduates early-career professionalsand individuals undergoing career transitions for employment in the cultural sector. This is achieved through hands-on experience professional development and networking and mentorship opportunities.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Construct/create props in a wide variety of media.
  • Pull and restock props from Juilliards extensive prop stock.
  • Research and procure props and materials.
  • Serve on run crew for one or more productions.
  • Develop budget management experience by preparing materials estimates.
  • Complete skill-building construction projects under guidance of Prop staff.
  • Learn repair and restoration of vintage objects.
  • Facilitate supportive rehearsal process through nimble responses to evolving information .

Minimum Requirements:

  • Passion and basic knowledge of the intended craft.
  • Bachelors Degree or related professional experience and transferable skills or a combination of both.
  • Familiar with basic shop tools.
  • Communicate well in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Commitment to a culture of health and safety.
  • Computer literacy.

Preferred Background:

  • Undergraduate summer stock or related Prop/Design experience.
  • Applicable fine arts or craft ability.
  • Portfolio illustrating completed projects.
  • Familiar with dramatic literature and history.
