Job Summary

Houston R-1 School District is hiring for a Bus Driver for the 2026-2027 school year.

POSITION PURPOSE: Responsible for operating the student transportation vehicle safely and efficiently transferring students to and from school over specified routes and driving activity trips as requested.

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt; Full-Time or Part-Time

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Transportation Director in accordance with provisions of Board policy GDN: Evaluation of Support Staff.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or the equivalent.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

  • Possess a valid Missouri Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus endorsement.
  • CPR and first aid certified.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Complete an annual physical examination by a licensed Doctor of Medicine within 60 days prior to the date of employment.
  • Has sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required to assist students in evacuating the bus. Successfully pass a physical test upon initial hiring and periodically throughout employment: The driver must be able to move from a seated position in a sixty-five passenger school bus or the largest school bus the driver will be operating to the emergency door open the emergency door and exit the bus through the emergency door all within twenty-five seconds.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • Successfully pass required background checks before the first day of employment.
  • Possess and maintain a safe driving record.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Embrace and work continually in support of the district mission of Expecting Excellence Learning for All.
  • Transport students following specified routes according to an established schedule. Transport authorized students only discharging students only at authorized stops.
  • Transport students coaches and sponsors to extracurricular events and field trips.
  • Assume major responsibility for passengers safety complying with safety and traffic regulations.
  • Drive safely exercise responsible leadership and professionally represent the school district at all times.
  • Comply with and enforce district policies and procedures.
  • Maintain student discipline according to the board-approved policy. Report behavior problems and student damage to the Transportation Director.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the bus.
  • Clean bus interior keep the bus fueled and maintain equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Report all defects mechanical errors interior damages etc. as soon as possible.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports as soon as possible.
  • Participate in required annual training and safety meetings.
  • Participate in and successfully pass required randomized drug and alcohol testing.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine (9) month employee. This is an at-will position that may be terminated by either the school district or the employee with a two-week notice. Wages are dependent on experience as determined by the board-approved salary schedule. Drivers are eligible for a benefit package as established by the board of education if their route is at least three hours/day.
