The River Nile School (RNS) is a specialist independent inclusive senior-secondary school delivering Applied Learning curriculum to young refugee and asylum seeker women who have had disrupted schooling or are struggling to cope with mainstream school. We are also a registered charitable organisation that delivers everything we do with our students for free.
RNS provides a high-challenge high-support learning environment with a strengths-based approach. It offers small class sizes and teachers and student support staff work collaboratively to achieve the best possible outcomes for each student with individualised learning and wellbeing programs for all students. RNS adopts a holistic model for supporting the unique educational and support needs of each student so developing strong student-staff relationships is essential. As our students come from backgrounds where they may have experienced significant trauma and torture we adopt a trauma-informed approach to our practice.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Learning Support Worker collaborates with teachers to enhance the educational experience of all students including those with specific learning needs. A key aspect of this role is following teacher guidance to support both classroom activities and individual learning with the aim of improving outcomes for targeted students. Success in this position requires the ability to work effectively within a dynamic and professional team environment consistently aligning with the long-term vision and values of RNS to ensure that educational goals are reflected in daily practice.
Position reports to:
Lead Teacher
Specific Responsibilities and Duties
- In consultation with teaching and other staff to assist students on an individual or group basis in specific learning areas e.g. English as an Additional Language (EAL) acquisition and Literacy support.
- Work in partnership with teachers and Learning Support Coordinator to implement appropriate adjustments to learning materials or the environment to meet the needs of the student and maximise learning as identified in Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
- Document and provide feedback for analysis by the teacher and/or Learning Support Coordinator.
- Maintain regular effective communication with teachers and relevant leadership personnel on student performance and strategies/adjustments to be implemented.
- Provide relevant and timely feedback to students during learning sessions and support students by listening directing explaining reassuring encouraging re-directing and reinforcing.
- Attend excursions school events and camps with students as negotiated.
- Fulfil the duty of care and wellbeing responsibilities with discretion and confidentiality.
- Participate in education team meetings and student wellbeing meetings as required.
- Assist in the preparation of student curriculum resources and equipment set up and put away equipment and materials in support of teaching programs.
- Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of programs and evaluation of individual student involvement and achievement. e.g. extra curricula programs.
- Other duties as required.

- Demonstrated ability to assist students with learning needs with a focus on inclusive classroom practices.
- Ability to present a professional positive warm calm and welcoming persona and remain professional by maintaining high levels of confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to show patience respect understanding and acceptance of difference in students. Experience with Culturally and Linguistically Diversity (CALD) students valued.
- Display empathy enthusiasm commitment and is highly motivated to contribute.
- Demonstrate an aptitude experience or qualification for this position.
- Demonstrated knowledge in working with adolescents and young adults who have experienced trauma are marginalised disadvantaged have disabilities and/or from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.
- Demonstrated capacity to work in a team environment both independently and with others have excellent communication skills sound organisation skills and strong Information and Communication Technology knowledge.

Qualifications Experience & Credentials
- Relevant qualifications including but not exclusively; Certificate III or IV in Education Support or a Diploma of Education Support or similar.
- Relevant learning support experience including working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) students or communities with complex needs.
- Experience in a flexible school setting highly regarded.
- Working with Children Check.
- 100-point Proof of Identity required.
