The Laboratory Technician is responsible for developing biocatalytic processes for the production of Active Cosmetic Ingredients (ACIs). This role encompasses the production of recombinant or native enzymes the evaluation of enzyme activity and the optimisation of reaction parameters to produce ACIs in a cost-effective and reproducible manner while complying with Clariants safety and quality standards.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the innovative development of biocatalytic processes for cosmetic ingredients within a global specialty chemicals company committed to excellence in quality and safety.

Responsibilities:

Process Development (Main Function):

  • Evaluate enzymes and reagents to detect the formation of desired products.
  • Isolate new compounds by crystallisation extraction or chromatographic techniques.
  • Prepare analytical samples and use analytical equipment in self-service mode.
  • Identify and optimise critical parameters for the development of the ICA synthesis process.
  • Optimise downstream processing for the isolation and purification of desired compounds
  • Perform multi-litre scale reactions for process transfer to production sites
  • Conduct recombinant enzyme production in Erlenmeyer flasks and SDS-PAGE analysis of total and soluble fractions
  • Propose technical solutions to overcome R&D challenges
  • Participate in the structural elucidation of new molecules
  • Systematically analyse and organise experimental results

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Present experimental results to line managers and R&D team members in the required formats
  • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment

Laboratory Management & Compliance:

  • Ensure proper maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Protect intellectual property by keeping laboratory notebooks up to date
  • Work in accordance with the Quality Management System according to ISO 9001:2015
  • Ensure strict compliance with safety during all experiments

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry or Biotechnology

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in an industrial or academic environment
  • Proven experience in biocatalysis and the development of biocatalytic reaction processes

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong motivation to work in compliance with safety and environmental regulations
  • Ability to read and understand scientific literature and reports written in English
  • Curiosity and adaptability in problem solving
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment
