Were looking for a Junior Designer to join our Design Team on a fixed-term contract.

This is an entry-level opportunity to learn grow and get hands-on experience in publishing. This contract runs through October. Its an ideal role for an early-career designer who loves books typography and thoughtful designand wants real experience inside a publishing environment.

Your contribution to the story:

At Penguin Random House Canada we house an award-winning team of designers who are passionate about having the best-dressed books for our authors readers and a production environment you will assist across a full range of books and support our design team across multiple stages of book design and production gaining insight into the full publishing workflow while learning directly from experienced designers.

Reporting to the Creative Director you will collaborate with production and editorial helping to design the best books for some of the worlds most renowned Canadian this role you will receive mentorship from senior designers and exposure to every stage of book designfrom concept to print. Your work will directly contribute to live publishing projects and real books on shelves.

What youll do:
Prepare files review and correct proofs with senior team support
Format and upload titles (all formats) into a proprietary system
Assist with scanning reprints second formats and mark-up corrections
Create information icons maps and design elements in Illustrator; assist with font and image research
Potential to design covers and/or mechanicals (layout design) and seeing projects through to production stage
Communicate with production/editorial teams and attend design meetings

Experience and knowledge youll bring (qualifications):
Degree/diploma in design visual arts or related field and/or print design experience
Good understanding of prepress
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign Photoshop Illustrator Acrobat) on Mac
Strong layout typography and attention to detail
Excellent organization communication and follow-through
Ability to juggle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Curiosity flexibility and a strong desire to learn
Assets include experience with Procreate knowledge Illustration/photography skills hand lettering skills an interest in arts and crafts or other creative hobbies bibliophile tendencies and typography obsession.
