Overview
The Assistant Professor plays a pivotal role in the masters Program in Teaching Literacy PreK-12. Working closely with the Program Chair the individual is responsible for designing and delivering program courses that focus on teaching literacy skills to students in the PreK-12 grade levels and ensuring overall program effectiveness. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to equity diversity and inclusion in literacy addition to teaching responsibilities the professor advises and supervises masters-degree candidates actively participates in faculty collaborative learning GAE committees and demonstrates scholarly productivity in the field of literacy education.
Responsibilities
- Designs revises and teaches graduate courses in Touro University Masters Program in Teaching Literacy PreK-12 both in online and occasional in-person formats in New York City and adjacent areas
- Maintains knowledge of current PreK-12 literacy curricula including literacy education methodologies
- Experience with assessment and effective teaching methodologies for students with diverse needs utilizing a variety of instructional delivery methods instructional and assistive technologies and educational resources for educational equity and access both in online and in-person settings
- Supervises candidates during clinical practice
- Serves as an instructional leader facilitating and participating with collaborative faculty teams course revisions and developing and sustaining transformative pedagogy in graduate teaching and learning whether online or in-person
- Builds and maintains clinical partnerships with schools and mentors in PreK-12 education fostering connections and contributes to the development of a clinically rich teacher education preparation program
- Provides academic advisement to program candidates and outreach to potential candidates
- Maintains a current record of scholarly activities and publications as well as professional service
- Serves on Graduate School of Education committees participating in both online and in-person meetings as required
- Supports and contributes to program level continuous improvement for national/professional accreditation
- Engages in successful grant writing
- Upholds the missions and values of Touro University and the Graduate School of Education in both online and in-person contexts
- Attends three in-person faculty retreats per academic year in September January and June
- Performs other duties as assigned which may include both online and in-person responsibilities
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Earned doctorate in Education or related field ABD with anticipated conferral date within one year of hire considered
- Successful PreK-12 classroom teaching experience of three or more years working with students who have diverse learning needs
- Successful experience in assessment and data use in the PreK-12 classroom with evidence of positive learning and development for diverse groups of students
- Experience in course and program design
- Commitment to culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy
- Demonstrated ability for scholarly productivity
Desired Qualifications:
- Evidence of success as an educator preparer at the college or university level in traditional classrooms and online including familiarity with online teaching platforms and programs
- Experience using Canvas and other technology in educational settings
- Active involvement in professional organizations
- Successful grant writing
- Expertise in urban education
- Experience with students with multiple special needs
- Knowledge of school and community-based programs and experience building partnerships in diverse communities is highly desirable
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Excellent communication teaching and interpersonal/intercultural skills across a wide range of mediums (including social media)
- Technology Skills - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word Excel Power Point & Outlook
- Proficiency in online learning platforms including Canvas Adobe Connect Zoom PlayPosit Yuja and other digital media
Certifications/Licensures
