The Peer Recovery Specialist I position at the BJ Robertson Behavioral Health Center (residential crisis stabilization and ambulatory detox program) is an exhilarating opportunity for those passionate about supporting individuals coping with Mental Health and Substance Use challenges. This multidisciplinary program operates 24/7 and offers a comprehensive approach to care allowing for rapid access to essential psychiatric therapeutic and peer recovery this role you will provide vital peer support and advocacy helping clients navigate their recovery journey by addressing their basic physical financial and personal needs. You will foster trusting relationships utilize evidence-based tools like WRAP and share your recovery story to inspire others.

Working collaboratively as part of a dedicated team you will empower individuals to set goals improve social skills and sustain self-help initiatives. Your role as a Peer Recovery Specialist is integral to creating a supportive and structured environment where individuals can thrive in their pursuit of recovery.

To be successful as a Peer Recovery Specialist I at our residential crisis stabilization and ambulatory detox program candidates must possess a profound understanding of Mental Health and Substance Use issues having navigated their own journey toward recovery for a minimum of 12 months. This personal experience equips you to provide authentic peer support and foster empathetic connections with clients. Essential skills include effective oral and written communication active listening and the ability to establish trusting relationships with program participants.

A commitment to personal recovery and the ability to model coping strategies are crucial. Furthermore prospective specialists must complete the DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training within six months of hire demonstrating their readiness to engage effectively with clients. A valid VA Drivers License is required as transportation may be necessary.

Initially the position involves daytime training transitioning to overnight responsibilities after 60-90 days promoting adaptability and commitment.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Must be a person who has experienced a mental health and/or substance use condition and who has a minimum of 12 months of successful recovery to include making progress in learning about and managing his or her condition and in developing a life outside of or in addition to this condition.
  • Must complete the DBHDS 72 hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid VA Drivers License.
  • Training for position will be during the daytime and will transition to overnight after 60-90 days.
